Angico Carver's Mallet

Just received this mallet. Seems to be sturdy and well made but I have a couple of comments. First, the handle is not sanded smooth. I was quite surprised that the handle is pretty rough. I will be able to sand it smooth and probably will add an oil finish, but seems like this should have come this way from the factory. Second, the whole mallet head is covered with some kind of wax, perhaps paraffin. It is quite thick and will take some kind of solvent to remove. When all is said and done, I'm sure it will perform just fine, but will need a bit of tweaking prior to use.

The picture shows a nicely finished product. In actuality, it showed glue stains and wasn't very well balanced for the task. It's usable and the level of my dissatisfaction didn't rise to the level where I felt that the mallet was worth returning. It's a tool and has to function - not look "Purdy". Still, I'd rather have the one in the picture than the one I was sent :-)

I am using it in the kitchen for cracking things, smashing garlic, etc. works great. the wood is super hard. I wish it was turned from one solid piece, but those days are gone. This will do.

Very nice. As a beginner, I appreciate having a tool at a fair price. I needed a good mallet but did not feel the need to spend crazy money on something that wouldn't be used that often. This has great weight and like others, I sanded the handle some.

The one I got was a solid effective tool that can take a good slamming without damaging the chisels when you sculpt or the wood.Recommended.

This is a great sized mallet for both carving and light - medium duty mortising.Note that the handle comes unfinished (the carving face has a wax finish) and thus you may want to sand the handle lightly and apply the finish of your choice.Overall, very satisfied!
