How secure is it to leave the awning on the vehicle in a city (nyc)? is there any quick release? does the aluminum case offer any additional security?

How you mount the awning is vehicle specific, the company I got my roof rack from made brackets to mount the awning too and they came with quick release clips. I didn't use the quick release clips and I used bolts with lock nuts instead. But like I said depending on your vehicle/ roof rack mounting will be different for everyone.

Will this fit a VW Westfalia using the avaiable rain gutter brackets?

No. It’s universal which means it fits nothing. It comes with some right angle brackets you can probably attach to a rack somehow.
