It is not battery operated. There is one side that you place your hand on and strap it down. Then you just roll it on the body in which ever direction you please

Are the roller bearings made from stainless steel?

Can you lie on it and massage your back legs etc?

You could but you have to put a lot motion with that portion of your body. I would suggest slipping it over your hand and massage the back of your legs as recommended by manufacturers. This devise truly works well for me.
