ARLINGTON Industries FSC405R Shallow Sconce Box

I took down a bathroom vanity fixture that didn’t have a box behind it at all and had a vent pipe running against the back of the drywall. This was the only real solution I could find. I had to cut an extra notch in the wall to pivot this box in and rotate it. It worked perfectly. I’m going to buy a couple more to keep around because I haven’t seen anything as well designed.

This box worked great to install a light where no box had been installed previously. The light that was taken down just had a wire coming out of a hole in the drywall. The space needed for this box was taken up by a regular depth electric box and the vent pipe for the sinks that the plumber decided to run straight up in the center, blocking the option to install a deeper box to center the light. I traced the box and cut the drywall to match. This shallow box comes with 1/2 and 5/8 inch drywall thickness adapters, a cord grip insert to hold the wire in place and the screws you will need. The clips that hold the box in place did seem to bend out slightly as it was tightened into place and felt like they could break if tightened too much, but the box was firmly in place and attached well. It seems strong enough to hold up the 3 bulb vanity light we installed. I don't think I would use it for a really heavy light or one that hangs from the ceiling. The one thing you may need is shorter screws for your light attachment hardware as the box is shallow. I have included a picture of the instructions and some install steps to help visualize how this box installs.

Overall a good product however the tabs are a little small and don't grab the drywall as well as I'd like.

The bathroom wall had a pvc vent behind it. This fit perfectly in that space.

Bathroom reno revealed a vent pipe right where I needed to mount my new light fixture above the vanity. I had an old-work electric box to install, but there was no way. This solution appeared when I searched for shallow electrical boxes, and based on the reviews, it looked like a lot of other people ran into a similar problem. I did need to open up the hole a bit (I drilled a 3" hole for the box I bought previously), so I shifted it a bit away from the vent pipe. It was enough to give me a little more room to manipulate the box into the hole and turn it back around to get it flush with the hole and to engage the tabs, but not so far that the light fixture looks off center from the vanity and mirror once everything was mounted. I'm using a two light fixture with down-turned frosted glass shade/globe that might be more than 2 lbs, but the box and "ears" seem sturdy enough to support the weight. The only negative is that the external "ears" that support the internal tabs are a little large for my light fixture. Shaving down the ears a little would fix this, but it wasn't enough of a visual issue for me to put more effort into it. In any case, I'm so glad this was available.

Needed to center vanity light over sink and mirror in bathroom remodel. The venting for the drain was centered as well of course and a normal light box would not fit! The light I was installing had some weight to it and this box was strong enough and so easy to install. Could not be happier with it.

I wanted a shallow box because there is some plumbing behind this fixture and didn't want to interfere. However this box gave me the flexibility to install over a stud, something I wouldn't have considered prior. Worked out well. Just need to make sure the (included) cable clamp is oriented away from the stud face, in order to sit flat, as it protrudes from the back slightly. Little tight, need to arrange wires carefully, and really need to leverage the fixture back for wire space, but this is expected. Worked well.

This product is supposed to work with 4” diameter sconce plate but the 5/8” wings are too small so this has to be returned it will not work
