Classic Polish Recipes
The recipes are written in an easy to understand manner and accompanied by beautiful color photos of the finished dish. The ingredients for all of the recipes are basic and easy to find where I live in Michigan with maybe a couple exceptions of dried mushrooms and poppy seeds. Although I can usually find a small quantity of poppy seeds in the spice Isle at the market. I like that the name of each recipe is written in both English and Polish; Apple squares = Szarlotka. Overall I'm very happy with the book.

middle of the road
This might be a good book for someone new to Polish cuisine or who had tasted Polish food without growing up around it.The range of recipes is fair and the number of recipes is consistent with the size of the book (see product description for number of pages).Gorgeous photos - but some of the dessert recipes seem to be included in the Polish dessert cookbook from the same author.I also found a couple of errors. One cake recipe listed baking powder, yet the instructions said to '...sift the soda with the flour and add to the wet ingredients.'Do I need both: baking powder and baking soda? If so, how much baking soda? The recipe didn't say. Or is it a typo and the baking powder is the baking soda. Although baking powder and soda do the same thing - their leavening powers and characteristics are different. Which do leavener do I use? This recipe appears in the other 'Polish desserts' cookbook and does call for baking soda and no baking powder. But that recipe uses a large baking pan (12" x 15") while this cookbook recipe (book under review) uses a smaller baking pan (9" x 12").I think the recipe in the other dessert book is bogus because it just simply can't produce a product that's shown in the accompanying photo. It's mistakes like this that detract from the authenticity and sincerity of both the book, authors and publisher, as well as make me more cautious to try any recipe and I buy cookbooks for the 'tried and tested' recipes; not for nostalgic reading.

My Great Great Great grandparents came from Bavaria/Poland area. I'm learning my family history through food and traditions. This book is great

Very good cookbook...
I'm not sure about some of the negative reviews. I'm Polish, but I have to say that growing up some of the women in my family didn't do a really good job of teaching me how to cook, so I've had to teach myself. This book contains many very common recipes, foods that we cook for dinner, family gatherings, etc. I do agree that at least this book taught me which spices to use/add, (such as marjoram, that's just one example), and knowing which ones to use with which foods/recipes does make a difference.

Not a bad recipe collection
I found this to be a nice collection of recipes, many of which my polish grandmother used to make. There were several more that I have heard of but never tasted. I'm content with the book recipes are easy to follow and let's face it pictures are always nice!

... lost when my mom passed away and they come pretty darn close
Bought this book to try and cook some old family recipes that were lost when my mom passed away and they come pretty darn close. If any of you know the folks from the old country NEVER wrote anything down, it was in their heads and they NEVER measured anything either. This book is as close the the real thing that I've come to as far as taste that I have come to and I've gone through a lot of books. It's the real deal.

Okay, flavor is good
I have only made two recipes from this book, the beef rolls and the pierogi. Beef rolls were awesome but the pierogi dough has been a disaster both times I've tried. The recipe has too much liquid so it's always sticky if made as written. That said, flavor is spot on according to my FIL, so at least there is that.

Culture at its best...
My neighbor is Peter Zeranski and I enjoyed reading and comparing their recipes to my German mothers cooking. I am a certified Chef and have a wonderful cookbook collection and will add this happily to my repertoire.See you Peter around the neighborhood...
