Rebuilding a severely rotted existing shower due to water damage from 60 years of decline. I gutted the entire shower, clear down to the rotted out sub-floor and floor joists, and stud walls and replaced everything, including a new properly lined cement pan. I finally got to this final step before laying tile. I applied 1 layer of Mapei Aqua Defense and let it dry. I attempted to bed this membrane in a wet 2nd coat. It does not conform to inside corners without buckling and leaving bubbles underneath and does not smooth out with repeated wet Mapei brush strokes. I tore it off and applied it to a test piece of cement board and it peeled off easily after drying overnight. I tried 2 ways, 1st by bedding it into a medium thick layer of Mapei. 2nd by setting in on dry cement board and attempting to paint thru. Very little bleed thru with the 2nd sample. After spending many months and significant money getting the project to this point, I am not going to trust this product to have the tile adhere to the wall sufficiently for the remainder of my lifespan. I decided to rely solely on the 2" cement board mesh tape which I used to lap all the joints with kwik-set, with 3 coats of Mapei over the entire shower stall, and trust my tile guy will do a good job laying and grouting the tile.
