Betty Lou

A Midwestern child who grew up and moved to California
Fascinating story of a young woman who grew up in the Midwest; her family was poor, but as her needs were met and she was happy, she did not know it. The book, written by her son based on conversations with her toward the end of her life, tells of the activities of small town children and teens in the era before the proliferation of radios and televisions, when the opening of a town skating rink was a huge deal. The story continues through her early married life and her family's adventure, shared with two other families, on a long drive to California. I could not put the book down and read it straight through.

Worth sharing!
“Betty Lou", written by Steven Phillips,is a wonderful true account of the life of his mother born in Paris Crossing, Indiana in 1927; and her eventual journey to California with her family and friends. Betty Lou's story touches and colors all the human emotions in a sensitive, memorable manner. This is a book to be treasured. I'm giving it five stars and I'm going to buy several more copies to give to family members and friends.

Life in rural Indiana in the 1930's then California after marriage & WWII
This is a wonderful story of the early years of Betty Lou Phillips’ life which began in 1927. So much history is covered in the telling of her story through the 1930’s, 40’s, and early 50’s. I enjoyed the entire story from beginning to end and especially the part about the road trip they took moving across the country from Indiana to California after WWII. I wanted the story to continue!

A snapshot of a time period that too many have little appreciation for...
I couldn’t put it down and read it all in a single sitting! Informative and well-written, Betty Lou offers a unique first person perspective into a time period that many today can only imagine, peppered with vignettes that offer profound insight into the woman she became.Excellent read.

Wonderful memorial of a Mother's life
This book is a very sensitive and honest book written by Steve, the Son of Betty Lou about their young lives in rural southern Indiana and their migration to southern California. This book is well written and is both funny and heart felt.A good read.
