What is it about the top tech product companies such as desertcart, Apple, Google, Netflix and Tesla that enables their record of consistent innovation? Most people think it’s because these companies are somehow able to find and attract a level of talent that makes this innovation possible. But the real advantage these companies have is not so much who they hire, but rather how they enable their people to work together to solve hard problems and create extraordinary products. As legendary Silicon Valley coach--and coach to the founders of several of today’s leading tech companies--Bill Campbell said, “Leadership is about recognizing that there's a greatness in everyone, and your job is to create an environment where that greatness can emerge.” The goal of EMPOWERED is to provide you, as a leader of product management, product design, or engineering, with everything you’ll need to create just such an environment. As partners at The Silicon Valley Product Group, Marty Cagan and Chris Jones have long worked to reveal the best practices of the most consistently innovative companies in the world. A natural companion to the bestseller INSPIRED, EMPOWERED tackles head-on the reason why most companies fail to truly leverage the potential of their people to innovate: product leadership. The book covers: what it means to be an empowered product team, and how this is different from the “feature teams” used by most companies to build technology products recruiting and coaching the members of product teams, first to competence, and then to reach their potential creating an inspiring product vision along with an insights-driven product strategy translating that strategy into action by empowering teams with specific objectives―problems to solve―rather than features to build redefining the relationship of the product teams to the rest of the company detailing the changes necessary to effectively and successfully transform your organization to truly empowered product teams EMPOWERED puts decades of lessons learned from the best leaders of the top technology companies in your hand as a guide. It shows you how to become the leader your team and company needs to not only survive but thrive. Review: Humble seller - Condition was marked as good, but it's really perfect 😁 book by itself is of course brilliant, otherwise I would not buy it Review: Excellent extension to Inspired - Another great book by SVPG and Mary Cagan. Worth reading Inspired first before reading Empowered. This book is simple to read, and gives you solid understanding of what 'good' looks like and is impactful for a product company. Great for inspiring or already are, product leaders.

Inspirational but don’t expect a silver bullet
I really enjoyed reading this book and enjoyed the inspiration it gave me. Generally there was a core theme throughout the book that each chapter reinforced. At a stage through the book I thought it got a little bit theoretical like I had a McKinsey consultant telling me how I should run my business but towards the end there were some good case studies that helped give a more practical look at how to apply some of these theories. I think as a book for some inspiration this is a good read but go in to it understanding that you should understand the full context of the book and then start to apply it to your own organisation. This is not the silver bullet that I’m sure many people hope it is (and will never exist).

Excellent take on being a successful software business
Are you starting your career in software? Whether you are a software engineer or a product manager or a director or CTO, this book has something for you. If you have spent a decade in the software industry, a lot of things in the book might have been things you have experienced first hand. I love how the authors differentiate mercenaries Vs missionary attitudes. Empowered has been eye opener for me. I've always wondered why loved working in a company while hated another. It was definitely the empowerment that was the big difference.

Best book on how to get the most value from product teams (engineers, product manager, designer)
Absolutely loved this read. In essence, Marty Cagan talks about the value of empowering product teams (several engineers, product manager, product designer) to serve customers with products that customers love, yet work for the business (by collaborating with stakeholders to come up with solutions that work). I particularly loved the fact that the majority of the book focused on coaching. "Empowered product teams are all about giving teams hard problems to solve, and then giving them the space to solve them." "..this is really what I see in so many of the companies I visit. They have product teams that are more accurately feature teams, and they're slaving away-pounding out features all day-but rarely getting closer to their desired outcomes." "Regardless of the reason for reviewing your topology, you should optimize for the empowerment of the teams by focusing on the dimensions of ownership, autonomy, and alignment." "Your highest-order contribution and responsibility as product manager is to make sure that what engineers are asked to build will be worth building. That it will deliver the necessary results." "Coaching is no longer a speciality; you cannot be a good manager without being a good coach." - Bill Campbell "Moving the product teams from the subservient feature team model to the collaborative empowered product team model begins with trust"

Keen to learn more product leadership?
Following the hugely successful “Inspired: How To Create Tech Products Customers Love” internationally renown product management guru Marty Cagan has just published “Empowered: Ordinary People, Extraordinary Products”. Together with Chris Jones, Cagan captures how the best product companies approach technology and empower product teams. Cagan and Jones are probably in the best position to see a stark difference between the technology-powered products created by the best companies and the products created by most companies. There are three specific areas where this difference is the most apparent: the way in which technology is viewed, the role product leaders play and the purpose of product teams. The book elaborates on these area, offering helpful stories and pointers. I highly recommend “Empowered” to anyone who wants to truly understand what’s involved in product leadership, and what is imperative for any strong product company.
