Someone Who Will Love You in All Your Damaged Glory: Stories

Surprisingly Thoughtful Short Stories
I will be honest: I mostly bought this because the cover is such a pretty pink and I am, in my heart, a barbie girl. That being said, this is an incredible book rec for Barbie girls- and not the Malibu Barbie. I'm talking disillusioned, deeply inquisitive, depressed Greta Gerwig Barbie. Each short story in this book is wildly creative and fantastical while still offering relatable and often heartfelt metaphor and real-world applicability. I was surprised to find this was written by the creator of Bojack Horseman because they seem so wildly different, but this book is so clever and witty at times that it's quite clear the creator is a comic. My favorite short story was a really macabre feature about a couple planning their wedding- it's deep, it's gory, it's awe-some and ridiculous, and most of all it is hauntingly, frustratingly relatable. I would definitely recommend this to anyone, especially if you're new to the weird and bizarre.

Phenomenal, funny, and moving collection
The stories vary in style, tone, structure, and message but each is full of rich language infused with humor that makes reading feel effortless. There’s an undercurrent of magic realism in many of the short stories that transforms the worlds into curious new places but the shrieking choruses and opposite doors and presidential chimera never obscure the heart and power of the piece. I’m a big fan of Bojack Horseman, so the wistful wit feels familiar but there’s just a lot here. This collection is focused on love but not merely romantic love, and that struck me over and over while reading. I can’t recommend this collection enough.

Some good, some okay
I liked this book, it was a really easy read. Some of the stories were really good. However, a couple of the short stories were just not very well done.

Wow
Wow. what a fantastic book! Thank you Raphael so much! And then ending it with that note in the acknowledgement to your wife....absolutely poetic and beautiful and gorgeous. Well balanced between funny, lovely and tragic (seriously I wish I could write like you without people asking if I'm bipolar) Just thank you so much for this book. If you're thinking about reading it and you're a Bojack fan whose favorite character is not the particularly wacky adventurous Todd, I think you'll love it. It is a book of short stories though so keep that in mind :)

Great, great short stories
I love this book!! I bought it right after it came out when one of my favorite radio shows was interviewing the author and reading excerpts- laughing hysterically the whole time. It's a hoot and so universal- even when it gets into the fantastical.Wish I had more time to edit this. This book lovely and so funny- my snarky teenage daughter loves it too- it's her sense of humor. I love how it seems to capture all of my bad relationships and also an even worse version of all of my bad relationships. You know that moment when your relationship is driving over the cliff and you start to imagine, well- it could be worse... These stories capture the worst versions. The writing is superb!

Two thumbs up from a couples therapist
As a couples therapist, I traffic in the world of love and relationships. Each of the short stories in this book applies an incredible (usually metaphorical) view of the nuances, joys, trials, and tribulations of relationships--romantic or otherwise.I will also add that I have always intentionally avoided short stories because I was worried that I would get invested in the characters only for it to end. But each of these are well-paced, impactful, and leave you going, "hmmm," afterwards. It's quite possible that it's changed my perspective on short story collections forever. I'm also now motivated to watch Bojack Horseman. Raphael is clearly brilliant. Please order and read this book. You won't regret it.

Wow
By page 50 i almost ran out of sticky notes. I fell out of love with the book as some chapters were not my cup of tea, but when I jumped around I loved it.
