Ricki and the Flash

Plot believable but not enough music
Movie is bogged down by the plight of the mother who leaves her family to pursue a music career which goes nowhere.Great cast, and final moments are filled with a reunion with now grown children at the daughter's wedding. But the first hour is dragged down with plot. Nothing new or original in the story.

I remembered seeing it on the big screen as if it were yesterday
I preordered this almost 2 months before it's release. I was so desperate as I kept begging for the movie to come home. Long before this was released on the big screen, I did research to see if it was going to be an independent movie because almost every movie Kevin (Kline) is in is sometimes an independent movie. Then I realized it wasn't an independent flick so I got the chance to see it. I bought tickets and seats in advance on the 5th of August. It was the first movie of Kevin that I saw at Studio City Mesa in Casper. The language is mild. I noticed that the moment where it goes "You brought your guitar." "Yeah, just the one." was cut out from the final movie. At the end of the film, when everybody started dancing to the Bruce Springsteen song, I whispered "Come on, Teddy Bear." (I nicknamed Kevin that because he was nice to me when I first met him at age 16 going on 17.) Some of the photos I see in the movie were from the ones that I collected. For example: You see a photo of Kevin wearing an orange sweater, that was taken from No Strings Attached. Another example is a photo of Meryl (Streep) touching Kevin's head and him looking all weird, that was taken in November 2009 at The Acting Company's Benefit Performance Of "The Lover And The Poet" in New York. Mamie was just a drama queen till she got her hair and her nails done. When everyone in the Brummel family came to a fancy restaurant, mostly everyone's been dressed up except for Ricki and Julie. I remembered seeing it as if it were yesterday. Kevin is and always will be so handsome; even for being in his late 60's. When I watched the trailer, I thought about Darling Companion. When I actually got to see this, I actually thought of the trailers and TV spots I watched on YouTube and Facebook, In & Out, The Ice Storm, Beauty and the Beast (2017) and the January 4th 1989 episode of David Letterman. Though I did think of Darling Companion a little bit when Pete and Ricki were craving sweets. It made me think of a scene where Beth and Joseph were in their cabin drinking wine and eating a sweet pickle. That and when they're arguing with one another before Julie said "It's like the 80's all over again." Kudos

"A" for effort, terrible plot
Well, Meryl Streep, as Ricki, is a truly gifted actor and did her part in this movie as usual. My wife liked the entire movie. A cast of over sixty supporting actors including Kevin Kline, Rick Springfield and Audra McDonald helped move the plot along. But honestly, the script was formulaic and entirely predictable which was a surprise since the writer, Diablo Cody, wrote "Juno". Meryl plays a musician who gave up everything for her dream of rock-and-roll stardom, returns home and tries to make things right with her family. Ricki returns home but the reconciliation fails. Ashamed, Ricki returns to her band in California angry and bitter, insulting her guitarist who is in love with her. He makes her realize he cares and they make love. Ricki receives an invitation to the son's wedding as an olive branch from the family, but Ricki can't afford to go. Her boyfriend sells his best guitar to pay for the tickets. The last scenes, spoiler alert, is played out a little like the end of "Dirty Dancing". Streep learn to play the guitar for the movie (lessons from Neil Young) and sings, no surprise remembering her in "Mama Mia" and "Into the Woods". Watching Streep sing covers for several rock & roll numbers is actually the centerpiece of the movie. Rotten Tomato gave the movie a score of 64%, surprising since "Mama Mia" only got a score of 54%. Does that me it was better than "Mama Mia"? Hardly! So, if you and your wife are looking for a movie tonight consider this but don't mention it as a suggestion. Meryl Streep recorded 12 cover songs and spent at least 6 months working on her guitar playing skills. So if you must watch concentrate on Streep performance in front of a live audience with no playback being used to enhance her vocals. Got to give her an "A" for effort.

A good watch
The characters are highly unlikeable, but the acting keeps you glued to the tv.

Edited version of 5-star movie
I really enjoyed this movie, hadn't seen for long time and wanted to watch with family. This version has about 10-15 minutes cut from the original. Major plot point (prob the first 5+ minutes of film) is deleted and backstory critical to ending was cut. It is still fun to watch if this is the only version available out there.

Meryl can't miss a beat, once again ...
I found her to be believable as an aging rocker trying to live as her true self, even if she's stuck between two worlds. While she & Rick Springfield are fun together, she also tries hard to stay close to the grown children she left behind, along with their father. It's interesting to see how Audra McDonald plays an Eve type to Meryl's Lilith figure.I recommend this movie as a good casual watch.

Rock on, man.
Mainly I just liked ogling Rick Springfield….(salacious giggle…) I've loved him since he was on Saturday Morning Cartoons when I was a kid. He's aged magnificently… I missed the whole soap opera era of him, ick, but I dig his long haired aging rocker look here in this film. And he was good…better than Streep if I dare say it.As for Meryl Streep…She was good in the film, but her deep 'duh' sort of accent wore on me after a bit….and this film has very few surprises. It's just kind of mindless entertainment for an evening or in my case, afternoon, when you are home with nuthin' else to occupy yer noggin. I'm sure she had fun making it. Who wouldn't? Rick Springfield…right???
