(Probably) Do NOT buy if you live in the US
I was re-building my sprinkler manifold and wanted to add a union for easier maintenance. I bought this and ‘built’ with multiple other items using pipe dope. On first run, all connections were solid - except for 2 leaks from the in / out of the union. SO I tightened them ‘a little’ more. No good. I removed them and verified the ‘dope’ was adequate. Next, I added Teflon tape to the connections with MULTIPLE wraps – better but it still leaked. After a couple hours of frustration, I just figured I had a defective item (like others have claimed).Next, I looked for a replacement (the 1” size needed is not carried at my local Lowes or H Depot). In researching, I eventually found a negative comment from someone who had a similar story BUT was able to get to the THREAD of the matter !In the US virtually ALL pipe fittings use a ‘NPT’ (NPT, FPT, FIP, MPT, MIP) thread standard. All of those describe male/female ends and are well-matched / compatible / interchangeable. The listing for this item is: “uxcell Brass Pipe Union Connector Coupling 1PT Fitting with Female Threaded…” Great, 'PT', let's go...But if you dig deeper…. This listing specifics say that the unit uses BSPT or ‘British Standard Pipe Tapered’ connections. This is the STANDARD thread used in Europe, China and Japan, but is rarely used in North America! One is easily fooled when connecting a PT with a BSPT as they ‘seem to connect normally’ but they WILL NOT CREATE A SEAL!In 50+ years of DIY plumbing experience, I had never heard of BSPT. Knowing that this is such a potentially misleading issue… I wonder why the seller does not make this more obvious or even why Amazon offers it for sale in the US... Never too old to learn! The union is WELL MADE! I’m only rating as 2 star because of the experience – not the product itself. To quote from sabspa.com…BSPT (British Standard Pipe Tapered). It is used in Europe and has a conic GAS thread. The seal is reached with the deformation of threads between the male and female part. BSPT is similar to NPT, but there is an important difference. The thread angle is 55 degrees instead of 60 degrees, which is usual for NPT. Therefore, an NPT fitting will be inserted in a BSPT connection or vice versa, but they will not be sealed. The BSPT fittings are a common connection method in China and Japan, but they are very rarely used in North America, unless the equipment to which they are connected has been imported.
