Origami Tessellations: Awe-Inspiring Geometric Designs (AK Peters/CRC Recreational Mathematics Series)

Great book
My first tessellation book was Origami Tessellation for Everyone by Ilan Garibi and I got this one second. I will compare them mostly because they seem to be the most popular tessellation books available at the moment. I think that for a beginner, Garibi's book maybe slightly more friendly. I prefer the instructional method of his book and I think the step-by-step illustrations are a bit clearer. He does not rely as much on verbal description of the steps and the pictures themselves pretty much suffice to show you what to do. In Gjerde's book, there is relatively a lot written about each step, which some may appreciate, but I found that some of the pictures of the steps left something to be desired. They are not bad, but occasionally it seems like additional angles and photos of intermediate steps would have been helpful. That said, I really do love this book, especially for the variety of the designs. While the vast majority of Garibi's book is based on square tessellations, and certainly takes that basic idea quite far, I enjoy the contrast in Gjerde's, a lot of which seems more based on hexagonal and other types of grids. So to me, both books are essential. One cool thing I have found with the designs I have done from this book so far is that, while he gives the crease pattern for all the designs, many can be accomplished without pre-creasing (aside from pre-creasing the grid, of course). To me, this is makes for less arduous folding that is a lot of fun.

math meets art
As a mathematician who dabbles in art, this book was a welcome addition to my library. But you don't need to be good at math to appreciate the art or to make it.The designs are made from a variety of different papers. Often the back of the design is just as interesting as the front. The pictures are beautiful, showing off the texture of the designs and of the papers used to fold them. The instructions are detailed. There are several basic types of folds that are explained. More complex folds are built on that foundation. As you might expect, there are diagrams for folding each design. But there are also photographs showing each project in various stages of completion.Very, very well done!

Utterly invaluable -- Tessellations 101
This book is a great primer on the principles of the most gorgeously abstract discipline in origami -- tessellations, repeated patterns in paperfolding that result in a flat planar surface. The pictures are wonderful and illustrate many of the basic ideas, and the directions are clear and will give anyone the grounding they need to branch off on their own and design new tessellations based on the building blocks this volume teaches. The instructions are also clear, and Gjerde is careful to warn the newbie about any pitfalls particular to a diagram.I can recommend this book to anyone -- but just make sure to purchase some mulberry paper before you open the book, because your fingers will start to itch the minute you finish it!

A great book for budding tesselation enthusiasts.
This is a great addition to any origami library. It is preferred I suspect, to have some experience and moderate understanding of origami and tesselations. The directions are clear and well articulated. The pitures provided give a better understanding of the various processes you follow while folding your models. The projects go from front to back in a progressive mannor; beggining, intermediate, and finally advanced. The models are created both by the author Eric Gjerde, and several other masters of the study. I strongly reccomend this book. For the price I consider it a bargain, it is a treasure.

Inspiration!
A collection of beautiful pieces that challenge and inspire one to study the folds and be creative! Well done for a genre whose information is very hard to find!

The book nicely progresses from simple to more complicated examples
The instructions are very clear. The diagrams are helpful. The book nicely progresses from simple to more complicated examples. I have used the examples in this book to help with complicated folds in other projects where I had been having problems.

Beautiful photos MAKE this book!
HOly cow - the photos in this book are some of the BEST ever in showcasing the steps for the folds and the photos of the finished works are mind-bogglingly beautiful. HIGHLY recommend this book!!!!

Instructions were pretty good but tended to skip a step every now ...

It's hard..
Bought this book some time ago and even though I love looking through it I can hardly do any of the folds it instructs. It is really much harder than it makes out. The instructions are not as good as he author might think they are. Sorry. Even the simple and basic folds require some level of concentration, time, repetition understanding that my patience is unable to accommodate. Still I am not dead yet will continue trying as the months and years slip by.

Only for VERY seasoned folders....
The book shows really nice projects, but there are very poor explanations on how to do it. There are standard foldings in the introduction, but in the single projects the explanations on how to actually do it are non-existent. This book is only for very VERY seasoned folders - otherwise: would such a seasoned folder actually need a book like this? I'm kind of disappointed and would not recommend the book.:(
