Based upon your experience using the Earthway seeder, what is the smallest size of garden that is practical for this tool?

It really depends on how much time you want to spend planting seeds, my first use was planting 6 rows of sweet corn about 30' long. Probably took me less then 10 minutes to plant so to me it was worth it for even that small amount. I plan to increase the garden size and with this product that isn't going to be a problem.

Question 2

What can you do when the seeds get caught and crushed before leaving the hopper?

This is one of the weaknesses of the Earthway seeder, particularly when using small seeds. This is primarily due to the flex in the plastic seed plates. The best fix that I know of is to use a 3 dia. Schedule 40 PVC end cap. Cut off roughly about 1" inch, basically leaving you with a shorter cap. Drill a hole in the center that will just allow a 1/4x20 bolt to slide through. Take out the central bolt holding the seed plate assembly to the seeder and replace it with a 1/4x20 bolt that is 2-1/4 long. The new bolt should pass completely through the seed plate assembly and new cap. Install a wingnut on the end for easy plate removal/replacement but tighten just snug enough to allow the plate to still spin freely.

Question 3

will it plant watermelon seed? will it space like 5 ft apart?

Accepted Answer

Sort of, and no. The only practical and reasonable way to plant on 5' spacing is by hand,, unless one is planting many acres where something far more substantial than a Earthway is called for.

Question 4

The sweet corn plate was dropping multiple seeds (sweet corn) at a time. Basically I over planted but still a decent crop. Any suggestions?

Accepted Answer

I did a trial run on the cement patio.  Corn seeds all came out with proper spacing and no wasted seeds.  Better to plant a little too much than too little.  You may have to waste one or two weeks to see germination.  Only three moving parts: wheel, pulley and the proper seed plate.
