A group of us(Western expatriates) read this while living in Beijing in 1993. We had seen the remnants of unbound foot binding on several women on visits to the markets in less westernized areas on the city. The book with chilling authenticity relates the proceedure and the mental games leading to and from foot-binding, a crippling of mind and body. It leads one to speculate as to our present ways to do the same -what ever culture we may be in. Worth reading!
