Review: Ergonomic Comfort - Steelcase Amia Review (Real-World Use) I’m about 5’9”, 180 lbs—pretty average build—and I use a standard 30” desk that isn’t adjustable. To get the chair at a comfortable height for desk use, I have to raise it all the way up, which leaves my feet hanging a few inches off the ground. So I do need a footrest. That’s probably the first thing worth noting: this chair seems better suited for medium to slightly larger users. If you’re on the smaller side, you might find it sits a bit high relative to a standard desk. Comfort & Ergonomics This is where the Amia really shines. The backrest design is excellent—very form-fitting with a natural curve that supports your lower back and encourages good posture. It’s not overly plush, which is actually a good thing. It keeps you aligned instead of letting you sink into bad posture. There is an adjustment period. If you’re used to slouching in softer chairs, expect a bit of soreness for the first week or two. After that, it feels completely natural. The lumbar support is adjustable, but honestly, I think most people will just leave it in the lowest position. It’s nice to have, but probably not a major selling point for the average user. Armrests (One of the Best Features) The armrests are excellent. They adjust up/down, side-to-side, and in/out with very fine control—you can dial them in to a really precise position. If I had to nitpick, they don’t come quite as close to your body as they could, but it’s a minor issue. Overall, this is one of the standout features of the chair. Build Quality This chair feels solid. It’s on the heavier side, which in this case is a good thing—it feels durable and well-built. The brackets and bolts connecting the backrest are thick and sturdy The height adjustment cylinder is strong and stable—no bounce once set Casters are solid, with thick metal pins (no cheap components here) Everything about it gives the impression that it’s built to last. Adjustability & Recline The tilt and recline system is really well done. You can fine-tune how much resistance you want, from very stiff to very relaxed. One of my favorite features: you can adjust it so that when you lean back, it stays exactly where you put it—no constant pushback or drifting. That makes a big difference during long sessions. The height range is also solid, with plenty of travel. Seat & Padding The seat cushion is great for someone my size. It’s supportive without feeling overly firm or too soft. That said, this is not a big-and-tall chair. If you’re significantly heavier (300+ lbs), the padding might not feel sufficient over long periods. The back padding is thinner than some chairs, but it works—it supports without interfering with posture. Wheels & Materials The stock casters work perfectly fine on thin carpet. I don’t see any need to upgrade them. The armrest material is a slightly rubberized plastic—it doesn’t get sticky or gross over time and seems durable. The upholstery also feels high quality. No concerns there so far. Value Retail price is around $1,100, and personally, I wouldn’t pay that. I picked mine up refurbished for about $470, and at that price, it’s an excellent value. If you’re deciding between a $300 chair and something like this in the $400–$500 range, I’d strongly recommend spending the extra money. The difference is significant. Long Sessions & Back Support I regularly sit in this chair for 8–10 hours a day, and I have zero back pain. That alone makes it worth it for me. After years of using lower-quality chairs, the difference is night and day. Final Thoughts This feels less like a purchase and more like an investment in your body. It’s not perfect for everyone—smaller users and larger “big and tall” users might want something more tailored—but for average builds, it’s a fantastic chair. If you’re on the fence and can find one at a good price, I’d say go for it. Just keep in mind: if you’re using a fixed-height desk, you may need a footrest to really dial in your setup.

## Questions & Answers

**Q: Does this chair have the arms? Just like in the picture?**
A: Yes, it does have thee arms as in the pictures. BACKSTORE

**Q: Is the seat (between arms) wider than series 1 or 2**
A: I would say yes as the Amia had the adjustable width standard which is an upgrade required for series 1 and 2 plus the seat is better for a heavier guy like me I’m 6’7” and 300 lbs and the chair keeps me comfortable all day long as I’m an inventory control manager and I spend the majority of the day in front of 2 screens. Hope this helps

**Q: I'm 6'4". Is this chair too short for me?**
A: I’m 6’5” and this chair is more than adequate for me. Notably, I’m also 270lbs, and have not managed to blow out the piston either. The same cannot be said for lesser chairs that I’ve owned, regardless of their claimed load bearing capacity.

**Q: If I order this with arms, does anyone know if I can easily remove them for my current situation, but re-install them at another point if needed?**
A: No these are not designed for removing. BACKSTORE

### ⭐ Squeaky and poor customer service
*by N***N on November 22, 2020*

The chair is actually pretty nice and comfortable. Also, I like how adjustable it is. However, every time I sit back and actuate the chair, it makes a horrible sound like unlubricated metal rubbing on itself; it is really loud and obnoxious. I returned this chair to Amazon because I thought this was a defect and the next chair I got had the same exact issue. It is funny because I bought this chair because my old chair, which is 15 years old, started to makes these sounds and now this $700 chair is worse! I talked with Steelcase and they told me that this is indeed a defect and that I could get a new one, but that was a month ago and now they haven't been returning my follow-up emails. I would not recommend buying this chair.
