ROCKET SCIENTISTS - REFUEL California prog rockers release their 7th studio masterwork Looking forward! The enduring trio of Erik Norlander (keyboards), Mark McCrite (guitars and vocals) and Don Schiff (Sticks and strings) are delighted to release their 7th studio album, Refuel. The full-length album combines both vocal and instrumental songs with the band's signature songwriting, performance and production style in 12 unforgettable tracks. Refuel also features stellar performances by guest musicians Gregg Bissonette (drums), vocalists Lana Lane and Kelly Keeling along with others including the brass players from the band's previous release, Supernatural Highways, and Norlander's Hommage Symphonique album which also featured Schiff and McCrite. Rocket Scientists released a 30-minute all-instrumental EP, Supernatural Highways, earlier in 2014 to mark the 20th anniversary of their first album. Refuel contains the balance of those 20-year anniversary recordings and is a more traditional album mixing vocal and instrumental tracks in the style that so identifies the group. Produced by Erik Norlander. Mastered by Maor Appelbaum.

We Have Lift Off!
I cannot rate any of Erik Norlanders music less than five stars. He is an incredibly gifted and professional musician. He has also recruited some of the best musicians to accompany him. While I do like Traveler on the Supernatural Highway better than this as it was all instrumental, this one is still among the best he has done. There are some vocals which do not take away from the music, it is just a different approach. Donn Schiff is a multi-instrumentalist who I have seen switch from 6 string bass to cello and not miss a beat. Mark McCrite has a voice that fits the songs and is a gifted guitar player. You cannot play like these three without mastering your instruments. Ne-progressive music that does not disappoint and makes you just feel good inside.

And while I like the new album a lot
Erik Norlander is keyboardist and founder of the band Rocket Scientists. From 2007 -2014 he was also keyboardist for a spinoff of the band Asia called Asia Featuring John Payne. I think the influence of that work made a strong impact on the Rocket scientists latest release, Refuel. While many of the hallmark traits of that band are still present, there is a strong Asia vibe running throughout, both in sound and song structure. And while I like the new album a lot, it's not as unique as past records.

What Asia should have been!
Rocket Scientists were absent from the scene for 6 years while Erik Norlander played in the questionable “Asia Featuring John Payne” project. I hoped to hear him stretch out in that band, but an album never seemed to materialize. Now that band seems like it’s over, and it looks like Norlander brought his Asia writing to Rocket Scientists instead. Maybe it’s for the best as this band has the strong progressive and artistic commitment that Asia seemed to lose after their first album in the 80s. “She’s Getting Hysterical,” “Cheshire Cat Smile” and “The Fading Light” evoke the early Asia style but still have an originality about them that is pure Rocket Scientists. And their playing is perfect as always. Let’s hope Rocket Scientists continue and make more great albums like this one.

Another great CD from the Scientists
More superb work from the Rocket Scientists. A great selection of new tracks. As ever Erik Norlanders keyboards are superb then add Mark McCrite with guitars and vocals plus Don Schiff on NSstick, bass and strings and the result is outstanding. I have only just found the Rocket Scientists but very pleased I did, certainly at the forefront of current prog bads for me
