Eye opening
This book takes you into the prison system in Iran after the fall of the shah and I gotta tell you, it is unbelievably horrifying, but real. I continue to be amazed at man's inhumanity to man.

A must read to obtain one perspective of the Iranian revolution
From one of Iran's well known writers; this is an account of her unfortunate multiple imprisonments and her life in the prison. The description of life in captivity is vivid: how it dulls the mind, how it brings out the worst in human nature, and most depressingly, how indignities slowly become acceptable. Some background about the multiple political ideologies of the prisoners would have been useful. Also, Parsipur largely talks about her own experience, going deeper behind the lives of the various people she encountered, would have made the book richer. One of her remarks is striking: "The jailed is always superior than the jailor"

Passionate and honest
Very powerful and poignant account of Iranian prisons in 1980s. Shahmush was imprisoned several times for no clear reason but was a non-conformist who passionately believed in free speech. I won't say any more regarding her experiences, but the writing is beautiful and clear. It is thought provoking.

Conmovedor
