The introductory notes to each dish provide useful historical background. The photos showing both a traditional and a fancy modern take on each dish are an interesting touch. Notes about aroma, taste, mouthfeel, texture, etc., are helpful, and the recipes are well structured. I didn't recognize some personal favourites however, such as laksa. I guess they had to choose one version. Excellent glossary at the end.

if you love traditional Singaporean hawker food and you want to make it for yourself, this is a great recipe book. I appreciate the simple explanation in this recipe book. Alot of great traditional hawker food listed here. I've already tried a number of recipes on this and I can't say enough about the food. My family loves the recipes. One thing to share is that the recipes tend to be on the generous portion side so cut down as necessary. Also, be careful about the laksa recipe as it calls for too much chilies. I can eat hot but this one is really spicy.

Always looking for books that relate to the history of my mum's cooking...Not spot on but it doesn't mean the recipes are not correct. Every cook puts a twist on their cooking...Love hawker dishes...

An extremely well researched and presented book that should be a favourite among Singaporeans and those that admire the Singaporean way of life, which, unsurprisingly, revolves around family and food.
