I Like You: Hospitality Under the Influence

Practical, realistic and achingly funny
I wanted to wait a while before writing a review for this wonderful book. I read it cover-to-cover after receiving my copy from Amazon. I wanted to make sure it's as fantabulous as it seemed on first read.As a lifestyle book, the hints are sometimes cheeky-snarky and sometimes serious and practical. As a humor book, Sedaris hits the mark just about every time. Visually, the layout is great and the art is varied and fun (I can't decide which I prefer: the photos or the illustrations). You can read the book repeatedly and still catch new things each time. For me, this book has worked best as a cookbook. I've tried several of the recipes and only had one that didn't turn out (the Swiss cheese puffs). The cheeseballs have been especially wonderful. I have learned a lot from the tips and tricks and have relaxed about cooking. The 15 minute meals in 20 minutes section seems silly at first glance but provides some groundwork for basic cooking that I think even seasoned cooks can use. What I learned from the book was about relaxing, whether in terms of cooking, entertaining or just life in general. I was never an uptight cook or baker but I often felt that entertaining was a lot of pressure. My teachers ranged from my mother to Martha Stewart, neither of whom would suggest a sombrero with a brimful of chips = Fiesta Night. This book has given me confidence in entertaining and cooking. Who knew that you could make "fruit salad" with a can of fruit cocktail and a little Cool Whip?I don't know how there could be any kind of follow-up book, since this one is so jam-packed, but I hope there is. Only complaint: Not all the pages were numbered (what's that about?) but that problem was easily solved with a mini-Sharpie. It's not even worth docking a star.

Just buy the book!
Come on, it's Amy Sedaris! You can't go wrong. Like everything she does, this is a charmingly raunchy and hilarious look at the art of entertaining. David who? Amy is the sibling to watch!

I Want To Attend an Amy Sedaris Party
Let me break it down for you guys: Amy Sedaris is like the new, progressive, more money-conscious Martha Stewart. This is nothing against Martha (I do adore her), but ever since I got "I Like You," I have found a new hostess to praise. There's nothing but brilliant ideas about types of gifts to give, why it's important to RSVP, and even how to make money during your parties. Each chapter covers a very specific occasion, whether it's a rich uncle coming over or an out-of-town guest, she has you covered with really tongue-in-cheek and hilarious anecdotes. I'm jealous that she and her brother are so witty. But, anecdotes aside, she's got plenty of recipes. Plenty. I don't count myself as a good chef, per se, but I can follow directions. I appreciate that her recipes are clear, straight-forward and don't expect me to buy exotic items that I'll only use once. It's an amusing book. There are funny pictures galore, really interesting tips to be learned. I haven't gone through the entire book yet, nor have I tried any of her recipes yet, but I am eager to get started tomorrow. That's right. Tomorrow.Get the book. You won't be sorry. It's oddly inspirational for those of us hostess-wannabes.

Hilariously helpful and informative
Amy Sedaris' book is chock-ful of actual recipes and hostessing tips, the recipes are all real; some of the hostessing tips are tongue-in-cheek, and there are several adults-only tips (those were the funniest, to me, along with her pretend adverts for things such as "pineapple-scented tampons"). The book has a retro look and feel that reminds me of some of the actual books my mother had when I was growing up (I'm a child of the 60's and 70's, as is Sedaris), with an appealing layout and engaging illustrations. The zinger for me though had to be her reference to one of my my favorite, obscure, 70's made-for-tv horror movies: "Trilogy Of Terror" - she lambasts Karen Black's character for her obvious "lack of cooking skills" in the segment with the Zuni fetish doll. That alone made me almost choke with laughter. In all seriousness though, this book is a great, entertaining read, full of yummy recipes along with some raunchy humor. You'll learn, and you'll laugh. I'm going to use some of those recipes too...and I might just put marbles in the medicine cabinet, the next time we have houseguests....

Great book, sad about the quality it was delivered in.
I loved this book as a teenager and was feeling nostalgic. So I decided to relive some childhood. Still love the book, but was disappointed in this quality from the seller. Someone superglued sections of the book together that tore as soon as I opened it.

Fun to read, photos by Todd Oldham, perhaps not for highbrow gourmands
If you like your cookbooks literally dosed with humor and digression and are bored silly by typical tomes full of elaborate recipes but are so boring you can barely complete the instructions, this will definitely shake things up a bit. What is particularly delightful about this book is the way Sedaris brings her quirky, irreverent viewpoint to the mix. Parts of this book had me laughing out loud, even as I was saying, "Oh, that's disgusting!". Yep, it IS that kind of book. She digresses, covering everything from feminine hygiene to dealing with drunken guests. So be prepared. Having said that, there are some decent recipes here and photos by Todd Oldham (at least, he was the featured photographer for an excerpt which appeared in a magazine, so I assume he did the honors here as well). I really like this book and reading an excerpt from it, even if I'm not in a cooking or partying mood, always brightens my day!

How to host and live
Loved it. Great book full of advice on how to host and enjoy your gatherings. After reading it, I didn't even need to host any more, just read more of a book whenever I wanted to have a party.

Hilarious and so necessary.
I did not know I needed to know all of this, but now I can be safe in the knowing that if anyone were to ever come to my house then I would know how to treat/deal with them!Read the whole book in Jerry Blank's voice, "I stole the TV".So funny and just enough erotic cake pics.
