There is a float attached to mine to ensure the water level does not drop below the level of the pump outlet.

Q: How does this.work for a hot tub

I bought this pump to drain my hot tub quicker than the outlet supplied with the tub. You simply lower the pump into the tub and sit it at the lowest point & it empties the tub in just a couple of minutes. It works perfectly & would recomend it.

Q: Does this have adjustable flow rate? I'm concerned about power consumption, does it use 400w all the time or just at full load?

Hello Dylan,This pump does not have a flow regulator just straight on and off. It goes into full operation as soon as it is turned on so will be operating at 400watts.
