Is one supposed to place a fitted mattress sheet over this product, or is it supposed to be used as is, thank you !

Place ontop of mattress, with a sheet then on top of the protector. No need for 2 sheets as the topper protects the mattress.

Do you actually need to wash it before first use? Does the 'new' smell linger? Don't want to waste electricity to wash & tumble it if not necessary!

I didn't wash it before I put it on the bed. As you are putting a sheet over it there is no smell .

If you can fit it in your washing machine, then yes. I washed mine twice. Came out lovely.
