Solid Colin Firth in Family Drama about Guilt, Loss and Grief
Let's be honest, the main reason to watch this film is it's star, Colin Firth. If you like him, you'll probably enjoy seeing him in this as he plays the bereaved widower and loving father of two daughters, come to Genova as a university lecturer to make a new start after the tragic death of his wife. If you don't like him, the film may have a limited appeal. While I enjoyed the performances of Mr Firth (I admit, I am a fan) and the two young actresses playing his daughters, the story didn't quite work for me. The premise of the family's mother dying in a tragic car accident (caused by unacceptable behaviour of the younger child), and the family struggling to cope with their loss and grief, has great potential. However, once the ghost of the mother visiting the younger girl came into it, it stopped working for me. I would have preferred a more rational approach to resolving the feelings of guilt and overcoming grief. Still, it's a thought provoking story, challenging you to put aside your anger about the bratty child causing the death of her mother and to realize that forgiveness is the only way forward for anybody. And also the only way to help the troubled child live with the consequences of her actions. And I will say that I actually quite liked the ending, even if I could have done without the supernatural element. On the up side: the locations in Genova are glorious and the city is given plenty of screen time. The DVD is good. Subtitles are available for those who may need them. The following extra features are also included: - Bringing Genova to Life: The journey from story to screen - Shooting Genova: On location with the cast and crew - Original Score: Melissa Parmenter's acclaimed complete score

Slowly unwinding grief
I did like this film very much. It is not a big blockbuster with a happy ever after ending. It is a journey with a start but no ending.Colin plays a widower looking after his children, after the sudden loss of his wife. He moves to Genova to start over. The film moves very slowly and gracefully along as the grief of these 3 people is played out. There is a feeling of continuity towards the end of the film, that life does goes on (even though the movie ends) as the family come to terms with their new life.Genova the city is beautiful old city, with amazing scenery, winding streets, interesting people and has a history. Some of the camera angles (from high up or from a child's perspective) gave me the sense of how easy one could 'lose' themselves in a such a place. The grief that could easily destroy them, ends up bringing them together in the end. It is beautifully made..

Well acted,good cinematography
This is a good movie, well acted and with very good cinematography. The winding slightly claustrophobic streets are almost another character. This deals with a father and his two daughters coming to terms with the sudden loss of their mother/wife whilst living abroad. The cast is good with solid performances. Particularly Firth who is always reliable.

Beautiful and heart-warming film with a mixture of joy, pain and hope
Reading the story previously we expected a rather depressiving film but the story telling and making of the film is so heart-warming and sincere that we enjoyed watching it very muchThe authentic and pure instruments director Michael Winterbottom used to realise the film are the perfect underpinning for the huge and impressive performances by Colin Firth and the two children which make the film well worth seeing.Aside from the great film I can recommend the dvd due to the special features. I was pleasently suprised about the interessting insights in the filmmaking and the informative commentary by the cast.Thank you for this authentic, sincere and lovely film.

ok movie but it didn't go anywhere
i bought this movie since i used to live in genova and i like supernatural films. this movie was totally average but a bit frustrating since every time you think something might happen...it doesn't. i've never watched a movie before where when it ended i was left with just as much closure as when it started. nice cinematography and great acting though!

Genova
Colin Firth as usual brilliant, his two daughters also. Had seen before on tv but had forgotten it. Story line interesting only as seeing how a widower with daughters copes with them and everyday life. Genoa was a place of narrow streets very typical of Italy. I do love Italy so maybe this was the main draw to buying the DVD.

Not the movie in the picture nor description
Misleading information is provided in the details and photo of the movie. The movie offered is Genova, with Colin Firth and Willa Holland (picture shows them as well as the description), but the movie in Prime is actually an Indian movie that is not related to this movie. Not sure what happened there
