Title is misleading
The title of this book is misleading. It has nothing to do with magick or invoking. However it is a valuable resource and an interesting read. Conway gives a brief and concise summary of the people of the land including waves of immigration and conquest by others, a description of religious and social customs, manner of dress, then gives a few myths, followed by a list and description of the deities, and ends each chapter with a bibliography for further study. The book has a chapter for each major culture but also has chapters for ceremonial magic, qabala, angels, elementals, and planets each with correspondences. It would be good to have on hand as a quick reference.

Shopping for Gods
Typical of many neo-pagan resource books, this book is filled with inaccuracies and speculations about the cultures and deities it presents. Conway has compiled a lot of information here and that has some value, but the quality of the info, as well as the presentation, seriously lack. I give Conway credit for compiling a list of deities sorted by culture (and in many cases, nationality too) because I can think of no other author who has even attempted a resource like this from a neo-Pagan perspective since the Farrars published "The Witches' Goddess" and "The Witches' God". This book might be a good starting point for a very green newcomer to Paganism and/or the study of ancient cultures. Otherwise, save your money for academic mythology books that are more readable and accurate . . .

Disappointed!
I thought this book was going to give directions on working with different Deities by Providing rituals, spells, incantations, summonings, examples of magical workings etc but instead it is just an incomplete list of different deities from cultures around the world. I returned it because I have loads of books like that and this wasn’t what I wanted at all. The book is nicely payed out, D J Conway is an excellent writer but this is by far her worst work. It’s incomplete. Feels rushed and doesn’t provide the reader with any magical insight into how to work with deities at all. This would only be useful for if you are researching deities to work with.
