'A hymn of love to the world ... A journey that is every bit as mythic as it is scientific, as sacred as it is historical, as clever as it is wise' Elizabeth Gilbert, author of Eat, Pray, Love As a botanist, Robin Wall Kimmerer has been trained to ask questions of nature with the tools of science. As a member of the Citizen Potawatomi Nation, she embraces the notion that plants and animals are our oldest teachers. In Braiding Sweetgrass , Kimmerer brings these two ways of knowledge together. Drawing on her life as an indigenous scientist, a mother, and a woman, Kimmerer shows how other living beings - asters and goldenrod, strawberries and squash, salamanders, algae, and sweetgrass - offer us gifts and lessons, even if we've forgotten how to hear their voices. In a rich braid of reflections that range from the creation of Turtle Island to the forces that threaten its flourishing today, she circles toward a central argument: that the awakening of a wider ecological consciousness requires the acknowledgment and celebration of our reciprocal relationship with the rest of the living world. For only when we can hear the languages of other beings will we be capable of understanding the generosity of the earth, and learn to give our own gifts in return. Review: 11/10 - One of my all time favourite books. Thank you! Review: Great Book - Such a lovely insight into a culture we can learn so much from - a delightful book.

Enjoy the subject, enjoy the language!
I half expected to be disappointed in this book, and I was so wrong. The author is a both a scientist and a poet. The indigenous wisdom belongs here.

Ode to nature and our true nature
It’s hard to put it into words what this book has given me so far, unlocks a world that we might have forgotten, a world of connection, reciprocity, deep reverence toward nature in a way I’ve never seen before. My mind and heart is cracked open. Very grateful that this book exists, thank you!

wonderful and inspiring
wonderful and inspiring. Some wonderful stories. Some inspiring words. A call to action. To gratitude. To reciprocity. To a future different from where we’re heading if we don’t heed this call.

beautiful book
The best books enlarge you and make you feel whole. This is one of those books. Beautifully written, with the wisdom of the elders. I was deeply in grief for our planet but this book gives me hope. Not hope that is founded on empty optimism but hope that’s grounded in wisdom. This will help you feel more connected to the natural world, and more whole.

A beautiful reminder of our connection to Earth, nature and all beings in it
Beautifully written essays that activate something inside the reader, opening up our hearts, and reawakening our awareness to the miracle of life and nature, through love and gratitude and reciprocity, and reminding us of our responsibility towards all non-human life and the earth.

A book we must all read
About our place within the living ecosystem, this is a book profound in its reach that reminds us about right relationship with the natural world and each other. By shifting paradigms of community through indigeneous memories and with its emphasis on balance and humility, it is a book that offers a healing gift to a toxic world.

Every immigrant should read it
I am still reading this wonderful book, which has already given me a sense of belonging. Every immigrant should read it, because no matter how other people treat you, Mother Nature is always there to make you feel at home and nourish your body and soul. Learn from THE NATIVES about the natives. What people there have planted and grow, what their relationship with nature is like, what the plants are called in their language. What connects us all and makes us feel related to each other is NATURE. I hope that after reading this book, people will be as grateful and appreciative as I am. It reminds you of your true instincts and makes you feel like a normal person who wants to pick berries and sit in the sun. At the same time, I have underlined the scientific information so that I can come back to it, and I thank the author for her gift of education and her gentle reminder.
