At first I was leery about buying this product because of the reviews. Yes, they were mostly good but then some where just awful and I didn't want to fall into the trap of ignoring the warnings in favor of positive news. I end up giving this product a chance because it said exactly what I was looking for in a Shea Butter product. I didn't want it fully diluted with other products or grainy or yellow or foul smelling. Plus for 16 dollars for a pound is a good deal when other companies sell lower quality for much more. Before shipment i received a nice letter, I'm not sure if it was automatic (pretty sure it was) but it was lovely anyhow to be noticed as a customer and to know the company appreciated my purchase. Shipping - I bought it on a Friday and received it on a Wednesday of the follow week. I might have gotten it sooner if it wasn't for the weekend, however, its still fast shipping compared to the almond oil I am still waiting on, the one I paid shipping on where as this came with free shipping and still got to me in under a week. Keep in mind, I live in the States in the Midwest so people further out or not in the country might have a different shipping speed. Packaging - The box itself came with another package so I can't say anything on the package stand alone. As for the image promoted. It looks exactly as the picture, same brown resealable package with a pound Shea Butter in plastic resealable baggie which is excellent because you can take out the product without messing up the brown pack, your hands, or product itself. Shea Butter - Its ivory white, none grainy, looks like a mix between play-dough and butter. It feels smooth to the touch and breaks apart fairly easy. In MY patch (which could be different for everyone else) in a small dime size amount, it only two about 5-6 seconds for it to melt from my body temperature and my average body temp is between 96-98 degrees U.S. The Shea Butter itself is soft enough to scoop out easily with a spoon, even a plastic one and I could mix a palm size amount with essential and other oils without heating it up first which is again; excellent, because I can make homemade body butters without going through the traditional methods of a double boiler. This also means unlike the boiler method you have to be very careful of the amount of oils the Shea Butter gets mixed into because it can easily become borderline Shea 'liquid'..unless you are making a shampoo, that's good too! Thankfully! This order does come with a recipe book the you have to DL online if you are into the type of DIY like myself. The smell of the Shea butter is earthy clay, some people might not like this, some people do, but you can add fragrance and the 'Shea' smell will tone down but not completely go away. Overall - Keep in mind as much as I praise this product and will most likely buy more in the future. I do have to add this product is not for everyone. If your skin/hair type doesn't absorb well, or you have very sensitive skin/hair, or skin/hair sucks up a lot of moisture (like my hair).... this product is not for you. Rather, I should say; buy this product will full intent on making the Shea Butter part of a larger blend or you will find yourself disappointed. Personally, I enjoy the Shea Butter, my mother enjoys it, and as I said, I will be buying from this company again. If 16 dollars (or whatever the price change will be by the time anyone reads this) is not going to break your wallet and you do want a good Shea Butter product, definitely consider trying this one out. OK, so I bought this stuff because it looked delicious. No, I'm not going to eat it, but the photos of it looking like fudge just make it so appealing, am I right? You just want to take a bite out of it. It's actually edible, but my guess is it doesn't taste as good as it looks. This stuff has a consistency similar to raw cookie dough. The photos are accurate. I chose ivory because I read that ivory shea butter is higher quality, which I can't confirm. When I first got it, I was impressed by the substantial feel and weight; I could tell right away that I have a lot of shea butter here, especially since I plan to use it straight as a moisturizer. To use it, I remove a tiny piece, and I do mean tiny. At first I made the mistake of using a piece about the size of a nickel, and it covered my hands in a thick sheen of oil that I had to wash off. Way too much. Now, I use a piece maybe the size of a pea to do my entire face. It does not go on like regular lotion: you need to warm it a bit before it spreads, which takes maybe 10 seconds, and even then you need to use more force than lotion to spread it around. Sometimes I rub it between my fingers or in my palm, and sometimes I just press a little piece against my face and work it around, letting my face melt it. Ha, face melt. Anyhoo... This stuff is an ingredient in many, if not most of the quality moisturizers on the market, and I'm starting to think that there are only a few key ingredients in moisturizers that really do anything and could work just fine on their own, but moisturizers blend in a bunch of filler ingredients to make it easier to use and save on cost. Shea is one of these, so I figure why not cut out all the filler and use the active ingredient straight? I don't know how accurate my speculation is, but I do know that this stuff moisturizes skin, and does it well. You have to work it in and be careful not to use too much, just enough so you can feel it on the skin. In about 10 minutes, unless you used too much, it absorbs into the skin, leaving behind a slight sheen that is more matte than many moisturizers I've used. It lasts a long time, too, keeping my skin soft most of the day. Allegedly shea is a natural UV inhibitor, which if true is a nice bonus, but I don't know what sort of SPF it achieves if so. The smell is not wonderful, but not bad. It smells a little like slightly rotten vegetables, but not in an overly imposing way, it's very subtle (I have to practically stick my nose up to it to really smell it) and the smell can not be detected once it absorbs, at least not per my experience. I wound up giving chunks of it to friends, and everyone has been impressed with it. At the rate I use it, this brick of shea would last a lifetime. I think it would be fun to use it as a base for making my own moisturizer, adding stuff like essential oil and food coloring maybe. Actually, I've heard that people use it as cooking oil, but I'm not sure that appeals to me.

This shea butter is fantastic. I made my own skin cream with it and other ingredients and also added 1 tablespoon of the finest ground used coffee grounds to those. I used my homemade anti aging moisturizer cream also as a face and bodywash. I first rinsed with water then applied the thick cream. I make mine in a very thick texture so a little goes a long way. I then wash and condition my hair while the benefits of the cream are absorbed by my skin, the steam of the shower makes this fast. Then I wash off the cream slowly so the fine coffee grounds do their work cleaning off any dirt while exfoliating my skin and adding more antioxidants to my skin. It is so amazing my own homemade skin cream works so well at both moisturizing and washing I have NO NEED to add other creams when getting out of the shower to my body or face. This saves a lot of time and my skin feels even better than when I was using expensive big name department store creams. My skin is firm and creamy feeling. I also do not have to put additional hand or foot cream on, this homemade cream is so fantastic. If you have time and the ability to make your own cream, I recommend it as the results are fantastic and also less packaging is used. I place my cream in a mason jar and to apply it I take a small amount out on a small spoon, then take my fingers and rub the contents of the spoon on my body. I recommend if making homemade skin cream with unrefined ivory shea butter that a large rocker blade is used to cut the bars and that an electronic scale be used to weigh the amounts of the butters. Large rocker blades keep the hands far away from the butter when cutting it and make it almost effortless even on a cool bar as leverage is used with them. I also recommend using a vacuum sealer that can be controlled so that it will not totally vacuum seal unless on the automatic setting such as the baked goods style feature many Foodsaver models have to store the unused butter. It does take a few hours to make a small batch (around one quart,) of homemade skin cream. I use one of my Aroma Professionals as a double boiler to make mine. I own a square plain glass pyrex style container that fits in the inner pot well and works great for this. I then fill the inner pot of my Aroma with water until just under the glass dish and place it on slow cook. There are usually many ways to fashion homemade double boilers from already owned tools to melt butters on low temperature if a double boiler is not on hand. IMPORTANT NOTE WITH THICK SKIN CREAMS: If using a very thick anti aging moisturizing skin cream as I have described there is a technique I learned from one of the folks at Estee Lauder, makers of my favorite perfume Estee Lauder Pleasures. Take an applicator (for my homemade cream I use a small spoon,) and place some cream on it. Then take dots of the cream and place it on the face, being especially careful not to get too much around the delicate eye area. Then using a tapping technique with the finger, tap the dots of cream, moving the finger around keep tapping to apply it. The cream is absorbed by the skin and also maintains a protective layer of cream on top of the skin. This is better than rubbing it in as it utilizes the cream more effectively as less is used and it will last much longer. Wash the spoon before using more cream. Store the cream in tinted jars or in a dark place. I add ½ tablespoon of citric acid to my batches of skin cream. They start with 4 ounces of butter, 2 of cocoa and 2 of shae. I also add a pinch of Mrs. Wages Fruit Preserver and some lemon juice. I make one batch, the one I use as my all in one soap/moisturizer/exfoliator for showering, with a tablespoon of USED FINELY ground coffee grounds. In the other I make it the same way I just leave the coffee grounds out. I also use hyalauronic acid and other anti aging ingredients such as grape seed oil in mine and one of my favorite inexpensive store bought breams which contains a large amount of Vitamin E instead of adding distilled water. I MAKE MY CREAM VERY THICK, even thicker than the thickest Estee Lauder cream. I do rub the exfoliator one I use when I shower. The other I dot more. A little goes a long way. -Julie Sands

Bought this to use on my lips because I was tired of using chapsticks and balms with a bunch of other junk in them, just wanted to go straight to the source to keep my lips hydrated through winter. I can't fault the product, the packaging is clean and to be fair the butter is a lovely texture, easy to apply, seems high quality. I think my only feedback and the reason I ended up returning this was the smell. Granted, I bought it knowing that it would have a smell. I was just expecting it to be nutty and smoky like the product description suggests (I'd never actually smelled raw shea before). I know everyone's definitions of scent are a little different but I'm not sure I know anyone who would have described the smell as nutty and smoky. I feel like that's being a little too polite. Or maybe it just could do with a mention that it can come off stronger than expected. When I popped the cap I immediately thought it smells like a tire store. I brought it to my husband and asked him what he thought it smelled like and he said it smelled like burnt rubber. I think it wouldn't have been terrible to tolerate if I wasn't planning to use it on my lips which are right under my nose. It was definitely too whiffy there. That said, because this seems like a solid product I did go and instead order the refined version for the similar effects of shea without the harsh smell. Also, feel like this needs to be said, I'd consider going for the refined version anyway if you have a known latex allergy. As soon as I put the shea on my lips they started to tingle uncomfortably, and later so did my mouth. I did some research on why that would be when shea is considered to be fairly un-allergenic and found that raw shea can contain traces of natural latex, which I'm allergic to. Not saying that's what was happening, but it was a similar reaction to when I eat too many figs, or underripe figs, which contain latex in their sap, too. Though supposedly the refined version wheedles most of the latex out. Be wary and always patch test if you're not sure, just wanted to mention because I'm not sure the latex and shea thing is widely known or observed.

***Update*** I was contacted by the seller who explained what normal shea butter should look, feel and smell like, and she helped me ascertain that this second order batch is probably not okay (my judgment based on the smell more than anything else). They are making accommodations to send me a replacement product within 24hrs!! Now thats excellent service and I am happy to up the review to a 4! But my second order this month has been so bad that I have to give an overall rating of 2...I hate leaving bad reviews on a whim, but my experiences are so vastly different:( I first ordered the Better Shea Butter "100% Unrefined Organic Shea Butter - African Grade A Ivory" back in Feb 2015. The product arrived in a brown bag, in which the butter was placed in a ziplock bag. I loved the packaging. The product also was an off yellow color and had a very nice, pleasant, mildly nutty smell (almost a bit like a very pleasant and light licorice smell). The product was smooth was no grainy or rough texture. I liked it so much I then re-ordered the product earlier this month. I was going to write a review after finishing the first pack but then thought perhaps I should wait to see how my second experience is with this product. I'm so glad I did because I am SO disappointed with what I received. First off, the re-order product was not in a ziplock, but rather in a regular plastic that when opened could NOT be resealed. Secondly, and worst of all, the product smells terrible - it smells like burned rubber...i dont know what exactly but "burned" is the definite vibe! It is so off putting even my boyfriend has commented on how bad it is. To add insult to injury, the product is very grainy in texture and not smooth at all. Also, the color is more grey than yellow. I am utterly confused about the inconsistent packaging as well as the inconsistent (and in my opinion), inferior quality of the second order. Why has the color changed from pale yellow/cream to greyish cream?? Why has the smell become so pungent and unpleasant? Why is the packaging not in ziplock? Why is the texture now rough and grainy?? From what I see on Amazon reviews, it seems my second order matches complaints other customers had, which then seemed to be improved upon, resulting in the improved packaging changing to ziplock and the product smell and texture being improved on...so have I received an old batch of the previous product before improvement????? If this were how it always smelled and felt, then I would not complain, but there is a vast difference between the two orders...this product has been the only thing that works for me (keeping breakouts away, skin smooth and well nourished)....and even though I like it, the negative factors right now make it very difficult for me to even use the product (the smell and texture especially) As said, I will update my review when I hear from the seller

The shipping was fast and the shea butter arrived well-packaged and in fine condition. The shea butter is very good quality. I saw some reviews that "it stinks". I don't think it stinks and neither does my boyfriend. It has a nutty smell. You do have to get used to it but it's not unpleasant to me, however I suppose that can be a personal preference. I have found this shea butter heals the skin. I LOVE it as a facial moisturizer, because it doesn't clog my pores. Coconut oil always made me break out. And I've had skin that could easily break out with most moisturizers, including jojoba oil. Apparently shea butter is a ZERO on the comedogenic scale of 0 to 5 (coconut oil is a 4 which explains to me why it clogged my pores and broke me out every time I tried to use it). I was a bit wary to use it on my face, but I can now say after use for a couple of weeks that I had no breakout at all, and my skin is looking wonderful - I especially love using it as an eye cream. It really improves the skin around the eye area and doesn't irritate my eyes, unlike the many expensive eye creams I've used, which did jack s*** for my eye area. This makes my skin healthy. It heals cuts and wounds. It is great for hands, feet, everything, and ALL natural. I don't like the recipes to add it to coconut oil because for me, coconut oil just cheapens the wonderful rich shea quality. I mixed it with lavender essential oil and use it as my face and eye cream. Totally will buy this again. The free ebook comes as soon as you enter the confirmation code from your order, so it was prompt. While I didn't use all the recipes, it's nice to have some guides on how to mix it up. I will use it with many essential oils for various uses. Great product, great service. I do wish it was a little less expensive, but other than that, 5 stars! UPDATE JULY 30, 2015 I'm pregnant with our first baby (30 weeks - over 7 months) and used this as a pure moisturizer throughout, it has worked nicely, still never causes any breakouts either. I use it on my belly, and any areas where women get stretch marks, after every shower. So far, my skin is supple and never has itched (I hear many pregnant women get itchy skin on their bellies because the skin is stretching). I make sure to drink lots of water and use my shea butter on my skin, and have felt quite comfortable, so I like this a lot. I've already ordered a couple of times, and will certainly order again.
