A colorfully illustrated biography of a little French boy who would become an internationally known oceanographer and champion of the seas. Once upon a time in France, a baby was born under the summer sun. His parents named him Jacques. As he grew, Jacques fell in love with the sea. He dreamed of breathing beneath the waves and swimming as gracefully as a fish. In fact, he longed to become a manfish. Jacques Cousteau grew up to become a champion of the seas and one of the best-known oceanographers in the world. In this lovely biography, poetic text and gorgeous paintings come together to create a portrait of Cousteau that is as magical as it is inspiring. Praise for Manfish "Berne offers a luminous picture-book biography about Jacques Cousteau . . . . Puybaret's smooth-looking acrylic paintings extend the words' elegant simplicity and beautifully convey the sense of infinite, underwater space." โ Booklist (starred review) "This moving tribute to the great nautical observer and filmmaker is shot through with an authentically childlike sense of adventure and the thrill of discovery . . . . This poetic profile of a doer and a dreamer is certain to inspire fresh interest in discovering, and in caring for, our world's wonders." โ Kirkus Reviews (starred review) "A new generation of children is introduced to the pioneering oceanographer and filmmaker. Beginning with Cousteau's childhood in France where he marveled at the sea and dreamed of breathing underwater, Berne reveals the unique mix of curiosity, ingenuity, and passion that drove Cousteau to make underwater exploration possible." โ School Library Journal Review: Manfish is a lovely book. - The book is filled with absolutely gorgeous illustrations. The problem is that on a few pages the text is black on top of navy or other dark paint and it is challenging to read. I grew up watching Cousteauโs show; this is a great intro for the next generation who doesnโt know who he is. Review: Beautifully written and GORGEOUSLY illustrated! - My son and I LOVE this book. It is like handing down something precious. My dad and I watched Jacques Cousteau when I was a child and now I share that with my son who is also fascinated by the mysterious world beneath the water. ๐ I initially gave my son this book when he was 3 and he tore it apart, so I highly recommend for a slightly older child. Now at age 5 he understands the story and loves everything about the book so he treats it specially.

Terrific book for all ages
We've accumulated quite an extensive storybook library at our house, and this was a fast favorite. The illustrations are beautiful - imaginative and colorful, definitely plenty to keep our five month old engaged. And the story is a substantial enough one (I even learned a fair amount about Jacques Cousteau from reading it) that I imagine we'll keep this one around for a long time, with our son growing into it.

Good book but dark lettering
This is a wonderful loved book for a curious 8 year old. The only thing I really wish was different is the text color. The words are so dark and are hard to read. Dark letters on dark pages. Hopefully they can fix it in future publications.

A beautifully written and illustrated biography!
I LOVE this book! My first grade class loved it too. It is an excellent picture book biography, and there are so many teaching points in it. It is beautifully and poetically written, and the illustrations are engaging and gorgeous. My students audibly gasped at several pages.

Fantastic book!
My 6-year-old son is very interested in science and biology. We discovered this book by accident at our local library, and what a find! The illustrations are gorgeous, the plot of the story very interesting. There's a lot of good stuff here for a little boy to take in and ponder. This one will be on my go-to gift list for any boy who is old enough to read, but not quite old enough to scuba dive yet.

Memories of my favorite Manfish to share
I was excited that i was able to share my favorite fish scientist with my granddaughter via this book. It is beautiful in the pictures and words. She loves to read and read again and now has even watched a few of his old black and white shows.

Sent this as a birthday gift to my 5-year old nephew whoโs very interested in the ocean and marine mammals. He loved it, and the family found the story of Dr Cousteau to be very inspiring! Arrived on time for his birthday, delivery dates as promised.

This book is so beautiful. I bought it for my daughter
This book is so beautiful. I bought it for my daughter, and recently for the son of a friend, both about 3 years old. They get the general gist of the story, but the illustrations are the real reason for this book. Puybaret (who illustrated the recent popular edition of Puff the Magic Dragon) has created his trademark serene, beautiful paintings for this book. One of the pages opens out to create a depiction of a slice of the ocean from top to bottom (you have to turn the book sideways). There's so much detail to pour over, the children love it.
