Bought this sledge to replace a traditional, hickory-handle, sledgehammer that finally splintered into pieces after years of use. The Estwing 8 lb. sledge has just been fantastic. We are using this hammer to split heavy oak for a wood stove and the hammer is a noticeable improvement after years of using a hickory handle, also with an 8 lb. head. The Estwing transfers less force/vibration to the hand, seems to require less work/force to split the >8" rounds, and when there are misses and wedge strikes, while the rubber around the sledge head gets torn up, the fiberglass handle underneathe just sheds the hits, so we expect to have this hammer for many, many years, whereas a hickory handle would have likely already been destroyed. Finally, the cost of one of these Estwing hammers off desertcart is about $10.00 cheaper, minimum, compared to our local retailer's offerings. And free shipping. That's incredible.
