Does it wear well as a neck gaiter, with the hood down?

Yes. It is very comfortable to wear and very warm both hood on and off.

Long enough to fit inside coat collar without a gap in the back?

It's 10 1/2" in the front from underneath the chin to the the bottom of the fabric. In the back it's a little over 7" long. It hasn't came untucked with my husband and he's a big guy.

What type of material is this made from? Is it polar fleece? I'm surprised that's not in the description.
