The false belief or opinion is that this PTU fluid is meant to be 'lubricated for life' on that PTU contraption but because of the sheer stresses and heat (Since PTU sits very close to the catalytic converter + Exhaust pipes) the Full Synthetic Gear Oil inside literally gets cooked overtime when you drive your vehicle and the heating and cooling breaks down the fluid's characteristics over the lifetime of the vehicle and once that happens and it looses it's lubrication characteristics the gears get ruined permanently once it reaches the breaking point. On top of that, there is this so called "Vent" contraption that is supposed to vent out gases and excess fluid also is prone to leaks.. the nut holding the vent is not torqued properly and it leaks fluid all over the PTU thus making the PTU a rather poorly designed and documented piece of part that is lurking in all the 4WD/ AWD Ford vehicles. Once PTU fails, it will sound like you are dragging bunch of tin cans down the road rattling as you go.
