An important contribution to photographic dialogue
Dawoud Bey: I'd never heard of him before buying the book, but as I had the other books in the Aperture "Photography Workshop Series" I wanted to see what he had to say. And though the black communities of New York and elsewhere are far from my reality, the way he approaches his subjects, and how he relates in this book to interacting with, respecting, and recording, the lives of his subjects, is invaluable for any photographer willing to make the commitment to taking photos of a community. You will learn from this book. You will be inspired.

Book Four in an excellent series by Aperture
As a photographer and teacher for me this book is an excellent resource and inspiration. Well written and full of the author's masterful photographs. A bargain at this price.
