The Best Collection of Short Stories
Not only was Jack London a great writer, his material is based on his real experiences. He pulls no punches and writes representing the attitudes and cultures that he actually saw. Some people may be offended because they have been brainwashed with malevolent pc mores. But for the objective intellectual, there are no better stories written than Jack London's South Sea Tales.

Intriguing tales marre by frequent use of racial/derogatory labels
The headline says it all. JL's writing is still quite readable (as he was a journalist at one point in his career) and his stories rather thrilling and intriguing. But of course, he wrote in a different age for a specific audience -- one less sensitive to issues of race and less culturally aware. Hence, natives (indigenous people) of the South Sea islands and other tropical locales are referred to as n*****s, frequently. This marred the reading for me; one cannot escape the frequent use of the n-word, nor its demeaning/dehumanizing effect (even while, in one sea-bound story, a second-in-command, detests his superior officer for using this label to describe a people that the second has some 'affection' for) . I suppose one could read/view the book as an historical document, of sorts, of an older time when daring Westerners (explorers, pirates, mercenary adventurers, etc.) were at their cultural apex and everyone else (non-white/non-Western) was simply in the way; obstacles to remove or dismiss as inconsequential.

Another great edition from SeaWolf Press.
Not sure what the other reviewer is expecting or reviewing. Who else is doing first edition covers? Go buy an actual hardcover if you want lasting quality. The quality of the cover, fonts, and pages is a step above normal for all SeaWolf stuff that I have, which is about ten books so far. They have very nice taste in design. I personally prefer their period art covers over first edition prints, but that doesn't necessitate a bad review. It's always a pleasure reading these collections. They are the go-to press for anything with illustrations. As for not liking their materials I am at a loss to understand why. The covers are nice and grippy, with a smoothness that feels like quality paper. Pages are thick. The product feels substantial No qualms with anything here in that area.

Cheaply made
This is not a review or critique of London's stories, they are as good as always. I am just very disappointed with the quality of the edition. The cover is very cheaply done, an out of focus photography of the first edition printed on clumsy fat plastic-like paper. If I had known I would have tried to find a used edition, something that feels right and proper in one's hands. This is a bit of a rip-off. Poor Jack, he doesn't deserve these kind of anniversary editions...
