Q: For something with a "cylindrical" profile, I don't get the dimensions. (5 x 2.5 x 1 inches?) What's the diameter of the piece held in the hand?

Paul, I don't get the dimensions either. The Gimbal driver is about 2.5 inches in diameter and 1 inch in length. I do not understand the 5. It is well made and has a nice finish. Taiwan I think. The nice looking (but slick) polished aluminum could be difficult to grasp with sweaty or greasy hands. Knurled would have been better but I was overall impressed with the quality. Tom

if you mean can you release the socket with one hand no. You have to pull the socket off, it's held on by a spring loaded ball on one of the 4 sides. It doesn't take too much force, but no way to remove the socket with one hand.

Q: Does it have a 'center' (between cw/ccw) or 'fixed' setting that allows you to apply torque in either direction without change or cw/ccw only?

No. It ratchets in one direction and locks in the other.. To switch direction of torque, flip wrench over.
