HELP
If anyone knows a narcissist, or worse, lives or works with one, this is a must read.Ironically, a full year before Trump descended the escalator, the writer, a Time reporter, used Trump as the quintessential narcissist. A malignant one, at that. I have several family members who suffer from the personality disorder (no medicine for it) and make everyone else suffer.By reading this book, I was better able to maneuver around those people -- and learned to just stay away! A must read.

Fresh Contemporary Interpretation
I loved this book. I've read pretty much everything published on the topic and this is the first one to highlight real life examples of the behavior so I can connect theory with practical reality. Knowing the behaviors to watch out for can determine whether one gets involved with the right people or not. Jeffrey Kluger has a fluid easy to digest writing style and this book is a wonderful complement to all of the more textbook-style analyses of the destructive narcissist personality. It is not the only book worth reading on the subject but it is certainly one of them!

Enjoyable to read
I liked the use of well known persons in history as examples, as they are a familiar frame of reference for understanding narcissism as a trait versus a disorder.

A lay persons book on the person who you can not please no matter how exhausted you become trying.
If you work, are friends with, or live with a person who you can not please no matter how hard you try this is the book for you. the author describes the narcissist so that the lay person understands their history and lays out a plan of action that frees us from guilt and exhaustion. We then become free to set boundaries and take care of ourselves. The book is not meant for professionals but is an easy interesting read for the rest of us trying to make sense of some one in our world who we find trigger the worst in us.

Don't waste your time or money!
I spent an evening with this book and sent it back. It contained nothing that would help anyone deal with narcissitic behavior; just a series of quips about famous narcissitic people and some of the more obnoxious things they did. The author tried way too hard to be witty and rambled mercilessly around until the reader became so annoyed and bored they couldn't help but QUIT!! People who see the title The Narcissist Next Door expect a book that WILL help them deal with narcissitic coworkers, spouses, friends and relatives. This book unfortunately does none of that; I think it's a narcissitic rant by a very wordy author! Don't waste your money!

Not everything it could be
I was excited to get into this book because I appreciate both Kluger's work as well as psychological books. I didn't know much about this particular personality disorder and was curious to learn. Unfortunately, I was disappointed. Yes, I learned a lot. Yes, Kluger is obviously well-researched in the topic and presents it artfully. But he doesn't reach these "juicy" (I guess I'm a psychology dork) parts until about 100 pages in. Before that he is telling stories about Donald Trump or explaining pregnancy and childbirth in tedious detail, all odd additions that sometimes seemed like attempts to up the word-count. Finishing felt like a chore and took me about two weeks which is about a week and half longer than it should have. Although I don't yet have suggestions, I am confident that there is better reading available on narcissism.

Next door or closer to home
This is a handbook on how to understand Donald Trump and people like him. (Sorry, but recent trends in the 2016 presidential primaries may make this an unfortunate necessity.)It's a good analysis of factors influencing this personality disorder, including the feelings of inadequacy shown by narcissists. The self-administered questionnaire is useful, showing this trait is on a continuum we all share to some degree.

I expected (was hoping for) a clear, expository, and thorough book for laypeople about narcissism. I thought it would cover what narcissism is, how it's currently defined and how that definition may have changed in the last decade or so. I would have liked some clinical observations on the effects of narcissists on their families, their siblings, their children especially, and how to deal with them. Instead, this book dwells for half its length on famous narcissisists in public life, "Look, there's another one! And here's another one! And aren't they ADORABLE! How entertaining these entertainers are!" The writer illustrates very clearly just how the narcissist has been received, usually since infancy. He's a fanboy. There is very little in this book on the destructive, vicious behaviors that comprise the actions of the narcissist thwarted. That's the part we need help with - not identifying how cute they are.

Narcissism - A Widespread Condition
Jeffrey Kluger's "The Narcissist Next Door" is less an academic approach to the subject of Narcissism and more of an evidence' exhibittype of book. In other words if you happen to have the basics on the matter at hand, then you'll find Kluger's account quite handy for itis rich in detail from all walks of life, from politicians to Hollywood! Should you seek a more systematic and conceptual account on thedisorder, care to look elsewhere. An extra for Kluger's readers is the NPI, an appendix on the Narcissistic Personality Inventory, a widely used test with which one may findout for himself or herself, in the comfort of one's home, whether he or she is or is not a narcissist. All that is required from the subjectbeing tested is honesty with oneself when answering the test.A great read!
