Yes, we used a wire cutter to reduce the length and a fine toothed hacksaw to reduce the height

What is the approx gap between slats when unrolled?

Hi, not much. I would say less than a cm. Because the slats aren't straight there may be a bigger gap in different parts from top to bottom but none are more than a cm.

Can I just attach the ends to something or does the middle part need support?

It needs support I used screws and stainless washers which was screwed to a back fence it needs screws with washers every 18inches.
