This cooler uses R600a refrigerant.

Does the unit have a top so if you dont put it under a counter ??

Yes it has a top. We use ours as a freestanding cooler and have wine bottles standing on the top as a counter.

Can I use this in a store as a part of my checkout counter? Will it be hot behind the counter?

I have no issues with mine. You need to make sure you do not block the venting. Remember the top is not stainless steel so we place things on it that will not move. The operations range is fantastic since ours is in a inclosed bar that is subjected to various temperatures from 20-90 degrees. We have had no issues at all other than humid days condensation can from on the glass.
