I got this because of a Beyond Ghibli recommendation. I made the grave mistake of watching it in English. There's a lot you can get away with in Japanese with English subtitles. In English it was a teen ... not romance, but ... very irritating. I suspect it is actually more nuanced in Japanese and I should have watched it with subtitles. My mistake. Don't judge the film based on that. The animation is very beautiful.
