The Improvisor's Bass Method: For Electric & Acoustic Bass

Cool!
Came quick as hell, perfect condition, thumbed through and yeah, it looks like a decent start for beginners in the first few chapters, but then gets into the more advanced cool stuff later. Looked through the Table of Contents at the Appendix II for transcribed solos and surprise surprise: they have Scott Lafaro's solo on "Gloria's Step" - SWEET! So, yeah, feel confident about ordering this book - it'll come maybe earlier than expected and it's worth your time - and for those people too lazy to learn to read the staff, which really isn't rocket science, this book does have some fret diagrams, but basically, you'll have to become a serious bassist and learn to read that treble clef because that's part of what's called musicianship. But this is s great book and you'll be satisfied. For the more advanced musicians, there's still something for us in the later chapters, different perspectives on viewing things - not to mention a few great transcriptions for contemplation, like Eddie Gomez's work, James Jamerson - not too slanted towards ONLY jazz (although you know Jamerson WAS a jazz upright bassist who did the Motown studio stuff as simply a hustle to get paid while he did what he loved - why else you think that dude's charts frustrated road bassists? He was a true improvisor!). Nice stuff and I LOVE bass, so I steer clear of whack-ass books - this is method's cool.

"The Bible" for bass players
This is the third copy I've bought of this book. My friends keep borrowing/stealing them. The book takes you from "This is a bass" right through Jaco Pastorius transcriptions. My personal favorite parts of the book are the scale exercises. Master those and you'll find yourself a much improved bassist. While I don't agree with Chuck's politics, his ideas for bass players are unmatched.

Very helpful with great insights into complex topics
Great communicator, able to get to the heart of any topic clearly & succinctly. Exercises can be incorporated into any repertoire and have plenty of scope to add your own creativity so they stay relevant and not boring; its up to you. Excellent

Undeniable a classic!
A great book teaching you the ways of the fretboard, scales and so on. This book has been around for many years and there is a reason for it. A must for all beginners who really want to learn the bass and the theory behind playeing the bass, without it being too theoretic. More advanced players may also benefit from this book, but chances are you already know most of it by now. I wish I bought this a couple of years after I started playing the bass and had a good grasp of the basic techniques. Then this book had been perfect, instead of 13 years after I started playing. But stil,l I learned som cool things and relearned things I had forgot.I found this book a little weak on scale practices compared to Serious Electric Bass by Joel di Bartolo, which is a book I really recommend. Are you seroius about becoming a good bass player with the theoretical grasp as well as the technical you should by both books.

Is what it says on the tin, essential purchase for any level of bassist.
If you don't own this book what are you really doing with yourself as a bassist? Pick it up, everything you could want to really learn is covered and dissected in this book, definitely something I'd regard as the bread and butter of any bassists arsenal.
