Wayward Threads: Techniques and Ideas for Upcycling Unloved or Discarded Garments Paperback – February 21, 2020

I loved this book. Lorri Scott has very successful edited the information down to essentials for upcycling, especially with #vintagetextiles. The projects are simple and successful, with many illustrations to show what steps to take from beginning to end. The garments are loose fitting, think Magnolia Pearl, so may not be for this who prefer a more tailored look. I enjoyed the muted palette shown for most garments, giving a romantic and sophisticated look. The examples were well within technical reach for most sewists. No patterns are included but it should be fairly simple to find similar designs, Tina Givens comes to mind. I look forward to making some of the designs.

A very inspiring collection of beautiful upcycled clothing tutorials. I found this book to have a great balance of photos and written notes. Lots of helpful advice on selecting fabrics and textiles for assembling these unique and comfortable styles.

This book is a work of art in itself. At a time when the world is in such turmoil it is lovely to hold a book in my own hands and to be inspired to create. In Wayward Threads, Lorri does an amazing describing her process in an easy and concise way and the photographs of the projects are beautiful.Lorri Ann and her designer and editor, Tonia Jenny, have both outdone themselves!!

Excellent book on upcycling clothes. Beautiful photos and well written. You will be making OOAK clothes in no time at all.

If you are looking for a book that gives ideas on upcycling clothing you will probably be disappointed.

Für mich war das Buch nicht das Richtige. Deshalb ging es wieder zurück.Was mich gestört hat?1. Viele schöne Bilder, aber wenig erklärender Text.2. Es gibt zwar einige Schritt-für-Schritt Darstellungen, wie man einen Schnitt möglichst Musterabdeckend auf antike Tischtücher und andere alte Textilien legt, aber KEINE Schnittmuster. Diese muss man sich erst kaufen. Im Buch wird nur mit zugekauften Schnittmustern gearbeitet. Auch sind die Texte bei den Bilderstrecken eher spärlich.3. Es gibt kaum Modellvarianten. Ein Rock aus Hemdärmeln, eine Tunika in diversen Varianten, teilweise auch aus Hemdenärmeln...Damit sind dann schon 3/4 des Buchs abgedeckt. Die Modelle sind auch nicht unbedingt super-originell.4. Einige der Umsetzungen der einfachen Tunika haben mir weniger gefallen. Ein dreckiger Futtersack, der unschöne Flickungen bekommt (und erst nach dem Vernähen gewaschen wird), ein (für meine Begriffe) sehr hässliches, bunt bedrucktes 60er Jahre-Tischtuch, das in eine weitere Tunika verwandelt wird, zwei nicht wirklich zusammenpassende Tischdecken, die noch eine Tunika ergeben ...Weniger meins. Auch die Farben sind meist recht fahl und fade, Weiß, Beige,Ggrau, blasses Blau...Kaum etwas Lebhafteres.Es gibt aber auch schöne Modelle aus antiken weißen, bestickten Haushaltsstoffen oder Denim. Die fand ich schon einer Nacharbeitung wert.5. Das alles sind gute, aber wenig originelle Möglichkeiten, alte Kleidung zu verwerten und Stoffe neu zu interpretieren. Dazu muss man diese Stoffe aber erst mal HABEN. Wer hat z.B. gleich 6 oder 7 alte Herrenhemden zur Verfügung, die er für den Ärmelrock zerschneiden kann? Und dann wird ja nicht das ganze Hemd verarbeitet, sondern in dem Fall nur die Ärmel.Es gibt keine Anleitung, was man mit dem Rest noch anfangen kann.Wäre es da nicht besser, die noch brauchbaren Hemden zu spenden, damit sie jemand anderes in Gänze und ohne Abfall zu erzeugen noch tragen kann?Entscheidet man sich doch für den Ärmelrock, kann man aus den Resthemden durchaus ärmellose Tuniken machen....Aber wer braucht gleich 5 oder 6 Stück?Das Gleiche gilt für die antiken Stoffe. Viele von uns haben so etwas gar nicht auf Lager und neue Spitzen und bestickte Stoffe kaufen, macht in dem Fall überhaupt keinen Sinn, denn es geht ja um Upcycling gebrauchter Sachen mit vorhandenen Materialien.Fazit: Alles schöne Ideen, aber nicht alle Modelle haben mir gefallen und auch nicht alle Ideen finde ich so praktisch. Für Anfänger schwierig, da nur sehr knappe Texte und keinerlei Schnitte.

I liked all the different sewing ideas

I was really looking forward to getting this book, (which was quite pricey),because of all the great reviews. I was really disappointed. Most of the designs revolve around recycling men's shirts, which I would never wear, or you had to purchase your own tunic pattern. I think the book could have been far cheaper or at least included a basic paper tunic pattern.

Received this lovely book on Saturday. There are a few minor typos that happen when people self publish. Love the beautiful pictures and concise and detailed instructions. I have a lot of vintage embroidery, crochet and lace and this book certainly has given me a lot of visual inspiration. I love upcycling my clothing into new garments. A perfct addition to my sewing book library.
