Its a SMASHING good time.
Have you played Smash Up? Well Munchkin Smash Up is pretty much the same except it is set in the Munchkin universe. It is NOT as random as Munchkin, and actually works quite well as a Smash Up game. The great thing is that it costs about the same as any of the Smash Up expansions, BUT comes with 8 character decks instead of just 4 like the expansions. This is NOT an expansion - although it could definitely be used on any SMASH UP game. This game adds MONSTERS and TREASURE cards to the mix. Each BASE has extra MONSTERS added to the base, but when you kill a minion (which can be the monster) you can earn TREASURE cards to add to your hand. If you were to play this with other SMASH UP decks, you would have to use the MONSTER and TREASURE cards - otherwise half the game cards wouldn't be worth playing. I like it as a stand alone game - and for the price (about $13 bucks) you are getting a SMASH UP game - fun to play - fun to smash bases with the characters from Munchkin. I wholeheartedly recommend buying this game. On my first play we enjoyed it just a bit as we had never played Smash Up before, but then by the second play we were much more thrilled with the mechanics of playing. Now we play though a game in about 30-40 minutes and have a good time. If it's still cheap (Under $15) I would get this! It's a great gift for teens. I might buy and extra copy for my school.

Professional Card Players
First let me say AEG has the best customer support of anything I have ever seen or experience. My munchkin expansion came and some cards where missing as well as some cards just looked weird I called up and explained the situation they sent me a replacement game. I'm sure it was a random production defect. Since a almost everything looked brand new. The replacement came pretty fast.Smash up brought me back into board games and my friends that I play with are regular card tournament winners and attending for mtg local and regional. So as you can imagine this game gets pretty competitive we even have drafts and round robins just to maintain balance. This was really a excellent expansion if you wanted something more as previous posters have stated this may not be the one you want to pick up first if you only have the base game. I would also pass on the Cthulhu if that's your second choice. This expansions adds a new elements it does make it longer but it could be just my group but people plan several turns ahead to try to calculate victories ealier on and pick which bases to contest and which to leave. This adds a bit more shenagins and disruption mess up the guy holding you down while stealing his points and he loses value on the base he worked so hard for while exhausting his resources. Owning a few expansions easily expands the players that can be played so people don't have to wait to play like some other games. It's not to hard to understand so I imagine younger kids will be okay with it to.

Great for Huge Fans
If Smash Up is in your top 5 favorite table top games, you should get it. The decks add enough variety to be worth it, from Clerics who can bring your dead back into the game, to Thieves who can steal victory points from the winner, to Halflings who can flood the bases with minions. Some of these decks have similar mechanics to previous decks (Zombies, Robots), but still offer a unique playing style.Nonetheless, I really don't love the Monsters and Treasures. They slow the game down. It's great to have a card that can destroy someone when you have a deck with no destroying cards and stuff like that, but it isn't thrilling.Due to this factor and the decks not bringing any wildly different mechanics to the game, I'd say buy other expansions first, and save this one for last if you're wanting to add more to your game. Awesome Level 9000, Sci Fi, Monster, and Pretty Pretty are expansions I would buy long before this one. Once you're ready for more, get this and Cthulu.

A great set, but ONLY if everyone agrees to use a faction from this box.
The Muchkin box for Smash Up is quickly becoming a favorite for several of my friends who love my complete SmashUp set. However, the addition of Treasures and Monsters means that for anyone not playing with at least one of their factions from the Munchkin set, they totally miss out on a ton of mechanics. Sure, you can use a Ninja to kill a Monster as if it were another Minion, but that faction is built for that ability to have been used on an opponent's minion, and failing to do so means you're falling behind, while the Thief faction instead starts randomly summoning new Actions and Minions out of the Treasure pile and laughs at you. It's the same issue that the Cthulu set had, where if you aren't playing at least one of the groups that understand/use Madness, you're just going to end up losing a bunch of Victory Points at the end because of all those Madness cards you couldn't get rid of fast enough. Toodles!

Great addition to our game collection!
Combining two great games into one! So far we haven't combined with other smash up games, so I haven't experienced how well it does with those. But, as a stand alone game it's lots if fun! So far my favorite combo is dwarf warrior, with elves being my least favorite faction. (As usual elves try to help other players win by giving them added bonuses, and I'm a bit too cuththroat for that) it'll be interesting combining treasure cards with other factions and bases. Dwarves and thieves might be less useful as they require the use of treasure cards for extra bonuses. As we continue to play with other smash up expansions I might update my review to reflect how it plays with the rest of the smash up collection.
