Great historical read and a tightly-plotted, atmospheric, story
I didn’t know much about this period of Irish history and was fascinated by all the detail. The author admits that whilst this tale is based on real events, she has used conjecture to fill in gaps. Yet I’ve no doubt that the portrayal of thirteenth-century Kilkennie (as spelled in the book) is as accurate as it’s possible to be. The description is vivid yet economical; with every scene it was as though I was in the room, an unseen observer. I liked the way the story was told from different viewpoints, which allowed the characters to be seen as others saw them. There lots of hints dropped, and for every time I wondered ‘how, why, where, when’, there was an answer; no plot thread was left undone and there were some genuine surprises along the way. It felt authentic, it felt plausible, and not only was it a great historical read, it was a tightly-plotted story too. I thoroughly recommend this excellent book.

captivating
The skill with which this book has been written is worthy of the highest praise. As a CS Sansom Shardlake fan, I am familiar with the senses described, evoking the ways and conditions of medieval life, and this is done in a particularly skilful way by Niamh Boyce. Her gift of language brings to life an era in Ireland that is, in equal measure, fascinating and frightening .

Beautiful beautiful novel
I’m from Kilkenny ... worked as a guide in the Castle ,a lifetime ago ...It was a stunning read and really resonated with me ... poor Petronella - First woman burned as a witch in Europe .. and so began centuries of misogamy ... chilling walking past the Thosal where she was burned

Her Kind never won
Enjoyed Her Kind as much if not more so than The Herbalist. There is everything there, turns and twists, humour, history and pain. Great read.

Her Kind.
Dreadful book. Written badly, very boring and too many characters. Couldn't make any sense of it. Won't get those hours I spent reading it back again.
