The Standard by which others are judged. Latch works well.
This is a great collar. I was worried about the latch, but no problems at all. The latch allows my 8 year old to put the collar on and off, since she doesn't have the hand strength to compress one of the links. Also, since you aren't compressing a link every time you put it on and take it off, the collar seems to be wearing better and should last longer. If I am anywhere near traffic, I also use a safety link that goes from the leash to his flat collar. That way if the prong should come apart, I don't lose the dog.One other thing. I ran my dog on some sand flats in the ocean. The collar developed some surface rust almost immediately. I rubbed it off with some 0000 steel wool and it hasn't returned despite lots of swimming in fresh water. If you want this for a dog that will be in salt water, you should get the stainless version. Unfortunately the stainless version isn't available with the latch. I'm going to just bring the dog to the beach on his flat collar, since the prong has helped to develop good walking habits in him that carry over even when he isn't on it.June 2019 update - This collar continues to work flawlessly. I"ve owned the kind without the latch and within a year some of the links are misshapen because of all the flexing necessary to take the collar on and off. So this is definitely a reliability upgrade. I have stopped using a safety lead running from the leash to his flat collar, which I used to do with the original version of this collar because the links would occasionally come undone, worn out from being bent. The only thing I would say against it is that we brought the dog in the ocean and even though I rinsed the collar off and washed the dog, it developed some surface rust. The rust was very very light and disappeared within a month. But the bottom line is that repeated use in salt water would destroy this collar. The up side is that Herm Sprenger makes a stainless prong collar. The down side is that they don't make one in stainless with this excellent latch.

Good quality
I've been using this for about ten months with my German Shepherd. The links are of good quality, and this is definitely the best brand of prong collar. I don't like the little clip release, it has accidentally come loose during training. I will likely buy another Herm Sprenger Collar, but definitely not with the clip.

This is Good Prong Collar
This is a really well made prong collar that works as it should. I have a 48 pound German Shepherd mix with 500 pounds of pull. I trained her with a prong collar that I have had for 10 years. The quick release clasp snapped off so I ordered this with the expectation that it would be of lesser quality than the old original -- this is what I have come to expect because so much of what is made now no longer has the same quality and material as those things made longer ago. The weight is the same as my old one and the flat tabs every few links may be an improvement over my old one that was simply continuous links. The chain slides really smoothly and easily compared to the old one. I looked at prong collars at the pet stores and they were not this quality (appeared to be aluminum and while lighter weight, didn't seem up to the task) and $5 to $10 more. FYI the collar I ordered was size M and fits Blitz fine. She is short haired and small boned. She is now a very excellent leash walker and the collar is fine as it is. If she were still in training mode I may have needed to remove one link as I did with the older collar.

Great quality, works well.
This is an excellent collar and works well as specified. This was a last resort for us, as we had tried the head harness, slip chain collars, flat regular collars… and harness… nothing worked at all. Very stubborn dog and the first dog ever we had a problem with leash training. Glad that we read all the information and watched videos on how to properly fit the collar and work with our dog. We have a very sweet, but lunging, pulling, muscular Australian Shepherd boy… very, very smart, and obedient in most ways, but would NOT stop pulling. The collar enables us to walk him easily, and saves his neck, trachea, and larynx from being damaged.. Excellent quality, very well made,. We ordered the quick release collar and it is easy to put on and take off. We hesitated for a long time getting this collar, as it does look scary, but is actually much kinder to the dog than choke chains or even regular flat collars.

Awesome training and walking device.
This is a real life changer when it comes to handling and training a pup. I tried several devices while training my German Shepherd pup, and this one finally helped. I have a very obedient, wonderful six month old German Shepherd. I took my very excitable pup for training to a training club that had about 20 other shepherds training at the same time in various classes. I quickly learned that my pup wanted to lunge and bark at any pup that she caught sight of and play, rough house, call it what you may, and only followed my commands when there wasn't competitive stimulation going on. It was so difficult holding her back. My hands hurt so badly from trying to hold onto the leash and not lose her. The pulling, charging and barking caused an awful lot of disruption in the class as other pups got excited and followed suit. This resulted in us not being allowed in the class as it was not fair to the other compliant, ready to learn pups and their owners. After several weeks of trying to develop socialization skills to get my pup behaved well enough to be in a class, we still had much to achieve. I decided to try this chain which most, if not all of the other dogs, had on and utilize at the training club. I kid you not, there was instant change. She decided to exercise self restraint as that pinch collar altered her idea of what she thought was fantastic fun. This has saved me painful hands, and furthermore, she may get to go in the next training class. I call this great success!!!
