Can it connect to my router though wifi (and not by ethernet cable) keeping the same speed?

It's called Range Extender under Operational Mode. Obviously the WiFi is doing double duty as both wireless client to your router and wireless access point to your laptop. If your Internet speed is 20mbps or less then this is OK, you won't lose speed. You avoid this double WiFi problem if you plug a cable in. Then it will only be using the WiFi for one of the links. Another way to do it is to use two of these plugged back to back. One is the Client to your router the other is the Access Point. Make sure they are on very different WiFi channels, you can set the channel for the Access Point.

I have powerline adapters in my house, if i plug this into my powerline adapter will it give wifi in that room

In theory yes but I’d just buy a power line WIFI adapter if you are already using.

Can i connect this to my router, switch off router wi-fi and use this as my access point. my sky hud wi-fi keeps dropping out

Absolutely you can, ensure you set the device to ‘access point’ mode. It has a startup wizard which should do all the basics for you with just a few selections. I’ve got 2 of these and they work great.
