A very nice grill.
Our old pellet grill finally bit the dust after many years of turning out great food. (It wasn't a Pit Boss) I've been shopping around for a replacement and this one gets a lot of good reviews so I thought I would give it a try. It's a beautiful grill. I will admit to feeling a little intimidated when I laid out all of those parts on the kitchen table (see photo). But with a little patience and just following the instructions step by step it went together rather well.I haven't cooked on it yet but I did run it through a break-in and test run. Everything worked perfectly, I started with the smoke mode and then ran it up through the temperature settings until I got it up to 450. It heated up well and fairly quickly considering that it was only about 45 degrees outside. It held temperature at least as well as my old grill, within about 10 degrees.I love the control panel, the Prime button, and the overall simplicity of use. The ability to slide a panel over to expose the burn pit is a nice feature for searing. You can easily empty the pellet bin to change pellets. (Yes, the bin is rather small but should be more than adequate for my use) There are two Jacks to plug in temperature probes into the meat and have the internal temp of whatever you're cooking displayed right on the panel. (The probes didn't come with it but when I saw that feature I immediately ordered some) And the grill is sharp-looking. I love the offset color of the lid. It really makes the grill look sharp.I'm looking forward to creating some great barbecue on this nice grill.Update: I finally cooked on the grill today. It sure wasn't fancy but it was a great test run. We had company over including 5 grandkids so I cooked up some burgers and bratwurst. Following the grill instructions I started it on the smoke (lowest) setting with the lid open and waited for the smoke. In just a few minutes there was billowing white smoke rolling out of the grill. I waited for the smoke to dissipate a little and then closed the lid and turned the heat up to 400. The grill heated up quickly considering it was about 40 degrees and windy. I decided to take out the upper grill to give me a little more room to flip the brats and burgers. During cooking, I found that the Prime button is very handy. What it does is boost the heat up by dumping extra pellets into the fire pot. It worked well by using it either right before or right after raising the lid to keep from losing too much heat. It also cranks up the smoke level for a few minutes which adds some great smoke flavor to the burgers and bratwurst. I found the grill to be very easy to use, and I can't wait to do something a little more serious on it such as ribs or brisket. I like the grill a lot.

Short review: I wish I bought this thing 5 years agoLong review: This is best modest price grill I can find. Been using it constantly since I got it. Only down side is the total size, but for the price I can't complain. I took out the middle rack and don't use it, but this can fit 2 racks of ribs or 16 boneless chicken thighs or 2 pork shoulders or a nice brisket. So it will do anything you need for yourself or a small group. Just don't expect to cater with this thing.Mine came with a small bend on the smoke fin but I almost never remember and didn't care. The temps do swing +/- 25-50*F so if you need something more sophisticated get something else, however if you are a beginner or just unsure if a pellet grill is for you, get this. Seriously don't think about it and get it. I've been using an offset smoker with charcoal for about 5 years and got tired of the prep. This pellet grill, I check once every 45 mins to stir the pellets and let it do its thing. It's so easy the other half is grilling now too and loves it. It does take about 5 mins to turn off fully and clean up is sorta annoying, the drip pan barely fits in the barrel. I wish they gave more than 1 tin drippings catcher, but they are cheap. If you are getting into pellet grills, get a tote with locking handles, keep your pellets in there and get a food grade scoop, much cheaper than buying a gimmick over priced pellet containers.

Love it!
This is my first pellet grill. Have an electric masterbilt smoker (which I also love). I had been wanting a wood fired grill/smoker for a long time but was not in a hurryโฆso years went by. I purchased this mainly from name recognition and the 297. price tag clinched it. Its just me at home so did not need some huge competion smokerโฆI am just a simple person not trying to impress anyone.Assembly took some time (longer than I expected and it is HEAVY. Have used it twice so far and according to other reviews this smoker knows its math, so it might quit on me after the next run (which will be two racks of ribs). As mentioned in other reviews there is a 20 degree shift in temp between set and just after firing up more pellets but averages I expect is what one sets temp for. I wish the controller was in 25 degree increments instead of 50 as one can not smoke at 275 which is what I would perfer, but temp difference is not super critical in a long cook.I love it so far, size is right for a single person and I just easily smoked a 12 lb. Butt for ten hours on itโฆ..pellet hopper is small, but large enough that I was able to make a run to the store for 40 mins and never came close to running out (thank goodness no one stole my butt while no one was home)! Looking at Amazon ratings is useless. There was a 50 percent chance I would love it and a 50 percent chance I would regret the purchase. Literally every other review is 5 stars and the next review is 1โฆimpossible to make a decision based on ratingsโฆ..THAT BEING SAID, I have only used it twice, so it will fail on me on my third use, and this is my 5 star review to be included in the top 50 percent of ratings. SERIOUSLY, THOUGH, I do like this grill.

4/5 works well for home cooking
Good grill. I have found it more reliable/less finicky than the Traeger we have at the firehouse, though this is newer and my personal grill and not used as much.I do think the hopper is a little small, though I think I could probably 3d print or make an extended top for the hopper to use if I do a very long smoke. I have learned you have to be very diligent about ensuring you donโt run out of pellets because the smoker has essentially flooded the fire pot chamber with pellets every time I have ran out then added more mid cook. I think it thinks it needs more pellets cuz the temp is low so just pumps more in which snuffs out the flame. I have had to open it all up and scoop out a fire pot full of unburned pellets 3x now, but all those times were me letting it run almost empty then filling the hopper with pellets.Have had ZERO problems as long as I keep the hopper full.

First time Pit Boss purchase by former Traeger user
Haven't used it yet, but put it together. The Pit Boss 440 is very well made and made with heavy duty steel parts. I've owned 3 Traegers and I must say the Pit Boss feels like it is over engineered and very well made. I like the searing feature, at least theoretically as I haven't experienced it yet. I'll make an update after first use and another after a summer spent smoking and grilling. So far I'm impressed and glad I went with something different because the Traeger was always temperamental and for the price should last more than the 5 or 6 years max that you get out of it before having to start repairing and replacing main components.

Brand New - yet with ERROR code *UPDATE INCLUDED**
I was so excited to get this new grill/smoker to try out that after we assembled it and was ready to Prime it up and do the first burn, when we turned it on, there was an ERR error code on the display screen. *SUCKS!*According to the manual, that means the "Grill Probe wire not making connection". It instructed us to remove the hopper access panel and check for any damage to the Grill Probe wires and Ensure the grill probe molex connectors are firmly connected, and connected correctly, to the control board. So while we did what it required in terms of looking for disconnected or damaged wires which all appeared to be firmly connected, it's not like the manual came with a picture of what the each wire is for and it's connection to the control panel and what "probe molex connectors" are -- but we googled it lol... nevertheless, as I stated before, everything looks fine and in order, yet the error code continues. I'm really hoping Customer Service can provide a quick solution because it's been a month and we're just getting around to getting this resolved after several unfortunate events have taken place since this purchase. Just pretty disappointed at experiencing this sort or issue out of the box. I'll update the review after guidance and a solution from the Pit Boss Support Team.***UPDATE*** I'm super late on this update and regret not doing this sooner bc we realized that the disconnection was not coming from the area the manual stated but in the area on the back, specifically where you connect the wires for the hopper when you're doing the assembly and then cover it up. So when we uncovered the wires, while it appeared connected we took them apart and then reconnected the wires and whala! It worked! We gently placed the cover back on and it's been working every since! We love this grill!! Since then we've smoked several beef plate ribs, beef back ribs and chicken and it comes out perfectly! A few tips tho, we never trust internal temp displayed on the face of the hopper, we turn the temp dial up one notch above what's needed to get the right temp and we generally judge the internal temp of the smoker by what's displayed on the circle dial on the lid of the smoker. Our first time as novices smoking chicken and beef was a dud bc of the inaccurate temp displayed but when we began doing this and using our better judgment all has been well! We love this grill and are happy with our purchase!

Buy a Traeger!
I bought this grill in mid April and it arrived a week later. Assembly was easy for the most part, but some of the screws were impossible to remove, and I could not mount the cable protector or put one of the handles on the serving tray, but that was only where the troubles started. Looking forward to using my grill for the first time to cook some ribs, smoke was billowing out of it constantly, and it would not maintain heat. I thought maybe there was something wrong with the pellets, so I replaced them to cook some steaks, and it was more of the same. Also, I had noticed that the fan would only come on for a few seconds after powering it up, and that didn't seem right to me. Also, there was a small explosion inside the grill. So, after all of this, I called PitBoss support and was told that there was most likely a wiring issue in my firebox, and that I would have to fix it. From what I was told, it seems like this is a common occurrence as they had a wiring diagram ready to send out to me to fix this issue. In the meantime, the new handle arrived for the serving tray, but no screws were in it. At this point, I am really angry, and I called back asking how I am supposed to mount the handle as the screws I was provided with were stuck in the handle that came with the grill. The support agent (Mia) suggested I go to my local hardware store to find screws for it. At this point, I was even angrier and told her I was not happy at all that I will have to tear my grill apart to fix their manufacturer's defect to fix the wiring issue. Being handicapped, I cannot get on the ground to get in the bottom panel of the hopper to fix the wiring, and she said, "well maybe you can have a neighbor do it for you. At this point I am livid! So, I have a 70 pound paper weight on my patio now that I cannot really do anything with, and it is my responsibility to fix it. I would strongly advise you to look for another grill. The product looks good, and there are probably many out there that are working great, but it seems their quality control is terrible, their customer service is worthless, and if you have a problem with your grill, you are screwed! Buy a Traeger!

Best Smoker ever
I usually don't write reviews when I am happy. Just when products are bad. I have to say I have had this grill a while now. NEVER disappointing! Easy to use! Does just what they say. People that may put a bad review needs to do their homework Like I did. Yes Temps will vary! Depends on outside Temps. Depends on how much you open the lid and let the cool air In. Get a good recipe,,,, Put your meat in, LET the smoker do It's Job......Cant remember what I spent. But I am very happy with this smoker! I am happy with the Metal That it has been made from. I will say I do not use it every weekend! My concern was maybe I do not want to smoke a Roast for 12 hours at 250Deg..... What IF I want a steak tonight? Twice? Fired It up at 450 and 20 to 40 Min had a very delicious Ribeye...I give thumbs up!
