HC100 Handy Box Cutter, Tap Open/Tap Close, 12 per Box, Assorted(Packaging may vary)

I ordered these years ago and my family still uses them. Cheap, sturdy, sharp, and can just replace with a new box after you inevitably lose some in 5 years. Simple push design, thin blade that can still be used for breaking down boxes 5 years later.

In my long ago youth, I used to work retail and we had box cutters just like these. They are surprisingly useful for so many different things and oddly difficult to find (at least I could find them at standard hardware stores) until I found them here on Amazon. I've never quite found anything else that is as effective, simple, and convenient as these box cutters. These have easily replaced single blades and are quite sturdy. I find the size ideal as they aren't too big and can be easily and conveniently slipped into pockets or wherever you might want them without being cumbersome. Simple sliding blade keeps it safe. The only real downside is the same thing that makes them convenient makes them easy to misplace. But, they are also cheap, so that's no big deal. I just get more. I did notice a lot of concerns about colors in other reviews. I got a good mix of yellow, red, white, and maybe others. I don't remember. I don't really care about the colors at all, but unit was a mix if someone else does,

Update from 2023, I just ordered another box (after trying another brand during covid, called "CanoPus" which were also made in USA... Pacific is still way better! The quality is maybe a little lower, vs one from the 10 years ago (the edges are a little sharper) -- but nothing else comes close for the price. These are like the original from the 1950s... used by professional stockers and packing folks all over the country. They are Made in USA, and beat the pants off of the Chinese knock-offs. These feature aluminum outer sheathes over steel holders. Over the years they seem to have removed the bottom grabber / scraper feature that some makes had. No problem as I only needed to hold the blade that way once in a blue moon. Very few people, outside of the packing / shipping and store room stocking trades know that these make some of the safest and most useful utility knives. I can't tell you how many accidents I have seen or heard of with the bulky Stanley style, and crummy break-a-blade style utility knives -- overkill for most any job as the blades stick out too far and retract clumsily with the thumb button. These boxcutters on the other hand ... neatly glide away when you are not using the blade, safe to put in your pocket. They have unlimited other uses anytime you need a sharp blade.. electronics, home restoration, cutting sheetrock, opening delicate stuff like watch cases, not to mention cutting cardboard!...The safety razor blades are not as tough as utility knives ... no problem --- just flip it over when it gets dull and replace it for pennies at any drug store or hardware shop.

I worked in a grocery store years ago and we used Pacific Handy Cutter tap/close type box cutters for all of our box cutting when new orders arrived and we stocked the shelves. (back in those days, they were just a simple silver metal color :-) ) I had several but over the years either by losing them or relatives just having to have one, I ended up down to my last two. The thing I liked best about these cutters was how easy I could remove the blade on the box cutting side and switch it to the other side and use it as a scraper. If you used one of these in the "old days" and expect to be able to use these as a scraper as well as a cutter, look elsewhere (perhaps to the Red Devil product listed on Amazon.) This product does not have the split opening on the opposite side of the box cutting blade to make it a scraper. Perhaps this was dropped as for safety reasons but it is a simple cutter and I can't understand why they would take away such a nice feature. I'm guessing they want people to use those retractable standalone scrapers which are nice, but the Pacific Handy Cutter that had the box cutter on one end and the scraper on one end was so much more convenient. In conclusion, if you are just looking for an inexpensive, nicely designed razor blade box cutter only, you will like this product as it works great.

Ordered a 12-pack and noticed quite a few were loose, where the sleeve of the cutter would slide off the blade without assistance. I started to hammer one of the sleeves so it would be a tighter fit and noticed that if I turned the sleeve in the opposite direction, that it fit perfectly. Keep that in mind if you purchase these box cutters ... if one of them is loose, turn the sleeve around and it should then stay in place around the blade. Edit 8/16/20 - I rated these 5 stars originally but am downgrading to 3. This was a buy-again purchase for me and like others, the originals purchased were color-coated and over time I've found I just prefer the older ones over the newer ones. The old stay in place whether closed or open and seem sturdier, whereas the new ones, even though my trick worked to keep them closed for the most part, the sleeve will still slide when open and there's just a difference in quality. Not awful but not great, kind of in between.

I have been using this style of box cutter for nearly 20 years and recently ordered two cases for my employees after our company inexplicably removed all utility knives from our approved supply list. These are basic, no-nonsense box cutters. They are lightweight, slim and fit comfortably in the coin pocket of my jeans. The replacement blades are inexpensive and easy to find. Comfortable to use. Others have complained that the box cutter is too loose. This is a common issue with this style of knife and there are a couple easy solutions to that. 1. Set the cutter on the ground (seam side up) and stomp it lightly with your heel. 2. Put a slight bend in the blade holder, about halfway down. Both of these steps increase the friction and make it less likely that the knife will open in your pocket. If it's too tight and won't open easily, remove the blade holder and stick something long and flat (like a butter knife) into the sheath. Work it around until it's loosened to your liking. These are exactly as expected and I will continue to purchase these for my employees.

Basically, this is just a razor blade placed in a holder and covered by a sleeve. The razor cuts well. As other reviewers mentioned, the blade-holder is dangerously loose within the sleeve, so the blade can easily come out unintentionally. Not what I would expect from a USA made product. I was able to fix the problem with basic tools (center-punch, hammer, a piece of wood and work gloves). It took me 15 minutes to fix the entire box, but I would have expected better quality to start with. Following are the steps I took to fix the problem. Don’t forget to wear safety gloves if you try this. 1. Remove the blade-holder from the sleeve. Locate the dimple marked by the red circle in the picture. Place the blade-holder on a piece of wood with the dimple protruding downward. You might want to remove the blade for safety. Using a center-punch and hammer make the dimple more pronounced. I hit the center-punch twice with the hammer. 2. Locate the PHC sleeve end that is slightly crushed. Use your thumbs to bend the PHC sleeve in further as depicted in attached image. 3. Hold the sleeve in one hand and the blade-holder (with the blade in it) in your other hand while supporting the blade with the thumb of your hand holding the blade-holder, so the blade doesn’t fall out. Starting with the dull end of the blade, carefully guide the blade-holder into the sleeve with the dimple protruding up and the sleeve crushed inward down as shown in picture.
