Notes on Nursing: What It Is, and What It Is Not by Florence Nightingale

Good read
I bought this book looking for a quick read for a train ride. I have been an RN for 14 years and enjoyed reading it. The English is not particularly difficult regarding the style of writing, though outdated, and I did find myself googling several words for clarification of the meaning which I considered a plus. Regarding the content , it just gives insight onto Florence Nightingales perspective of bedside nursing and challenges of her time. Kind off validating in that many of her challenges remain our challenges as well. As a guy it was interesting that she was really writing towards a female audience , which was fair enough, as the book is a good reflection her times. That being said, I didn’t read it cover to cover. As it was very interesting, after a while I did loose interest. Maybe to much internet.

A very valuable nursing reference
Every person who is in the health care profession should read this book!Florence Nightingale change history when she wrote her book. When I went to London, I had the honor of visiting the hospital she taught at. The museum had her nursing bag on display. I couldn’t help but to be greatly moved during this visit!I returned to the United States with a new, deeper respect for my profession!John Smithkey III, BSN, RN, LSN

Nursing History
I was initially given this book 50 years ago by my mentor when I was a young nurse. Despite the fact it was written 170 years ago,it is still relevant today. Many of Florence Nightingale’s ideas about sanitation, nutrition and the care of the “ sick room” were the foundation of nursing and modern medicine. To continue the tradition,I now give this as a gift to the young nurses I know. I write a personal letter to accompany the book to give encouragement for a person entering the difficult but most noble profession.

Great Reading For Your Family Of Nurses
Both my wife and daughter are nurses and also history buffs. My wife has told me endless stories about Florence Nightingale, but this book includes a wealth of knowledge they can share with other nurses. It delves into the ideas, knowledge, and observations of Florence Nightingale. She integrated the new concepts in patient care, saveing the lives of countless millions of patients. The medical community much to her contributions in patient care.
