Sacra Pagina: The Acts Of The Apostles (Volume 5) Review: A Reader-Friendly Commentary that Excels in Depth of Insight - This 1990s Acts commentary by noted Catholic exegete Luke Timothy Johnson is excellent for a number of reasons: - Unlike numerous other biblical commentaries, Johnson does not devote much space arguing with other scholars. He has done most of this work off the pages. This makes for an engaging reading experience and for a more original commentary. LTJ chooses rather to interact with ancient writers (such as Josephus and the major Latin and Greek poets, historians, and philosophers) and other books of Scripture. This multiplicity of voices helps to put Acts in its ancient context and allows readers to appreciate Luke's narrative gifts by comparing his style to other writers. This commentary absolutely excels in this way. It does not overwhelm the reader with full quotations of pertinent passages but rather directs the reader to them. This keeps the commentary from being bogged down with details that are tedious to wade through. - Throughout this work LTJ remains more concerned in the flow and purpose of the narrative of Acts rather than critical issues about the author and levels of redaction. LTJ remains thoroughly engaged with all critical discussions while avoiding detracting from the excitement of the narrative. - As a believing Catholic, LTJ gives the believing reader a refreshing reading of the Book of Acts as it was written for the benefit of the whole Church. - The Sacra Pagina format is very easy to use (even though the Greek is transliterated). LTJ gives an excellent, original translation which is followed by individual verse textual notes. In these notes LTJ addresses important Lucan vocabulary/syntax and theological themes. He also relates matters of style, vocabulary, theology, and history to other ancient writings. Then follows usually a few page "interpretation" section where he deals with the text holistically, relating it back to the Gospel of Luke and the overall narrative of Acts. The book itself is well made and is a pleasure to use. - LTJ comments extensively on Codex Bezae (D), a 5th century Greek text that interestingly adds much to the Book of Acts not found in other manuscripts. Overall this is the most readable and engaging commentaries on Acts that I have used. I use it along with C.K. Barrett's ICC volumes, Bede's commentary, Willimon's volume in Interpretation, Soard's book which looks at the speeches in Acts, and occasionally I. Howard Marshall's book in the Tyndale series. I love this work the most because of LTJ's engaging writing style, linkages he makes to other ancient (biblical and non-biblical) writings, and great sensitivity to narrative and language. This is highly recommended. I look forward to the Acts volumes that are forthcoming in the Concordia series, Word series, and Two Horizons series. Review: The book is in excellent condition - The book is like new. ## Technical Specifications | Specification | Value | |---------------|-------| | Best Sellers Rank | #79,171 in Books ( See Top 100 in Books ) #111 in New Testament Criticism & Interpretation #217 in Jesus, the Gospels & Acts (Books) #218 in New Testament Commentaries | | Customer Reviews | 4.8 4.8 out of 5 stars (83) | | Dimensions | 6 x 1.38 x 9 inches | | ISBN-10 | 0814659683 | | ISBN-13 | 978-0814659687 | | Item Weight | 1.75 pounds | | Language | English | | Part of series | Sacra Pagina | | Print length | 592 pages | | Publication date | August 1, 2006 | | Publisher | Liturgical Press | ## Images ![Sacra Pagina: The Acts Of The Apostles (Volume 5) - Image 1](https://m.media-amazon.com/images/I/71kn0lW4hhL.jpg) ## Customer Reviews ### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ A Reader-Friendly Commentary that Excels in Depth of Insight *by A***M on April 21, 2015* This 1990s Acts commentary by noted Catholic exegete Luke Timothy Johnson is excellent for a number of reasons: - Unlike numerous other biblical commentaries, Johnson does not devote much space arguing with other scholars. His scholarship is outstanding and his writing skills turned a reference book into a veritable page turner. We found information here that isn't to be found in any other book on Acts that we have used, and he skillfully includes salient information from countless other bible scholars along with his own conclusions allowing the reader to widen his view of current exegesis. --- ## Why Shop on Desertcart? - 🛒 **Trusted by 1.3+ Million Shoppers** — Serving international shoppers since 2016 - 🌍 **Shop Globally** — Access 737+ million products across 21 categories - 💰 **No Hidden Fees** — All customs, duties, and taxes included in the price - 🔄 **15-Day Free Returns** — Hassle-free returns (30 days for PRO members) - 🔒 **Secure Payments** — Trusted payment options with buyer protection - ⭐ **TrustPilot Rated 4.5/5** — Based on 8,000+ happy customer reviews **Shop now:** [https://www.desertcart.jp/products/18314428-sacra-pagina-the-acts-of-the-apostles-volume-5](https://www.desertcart.jp/products/18314428-sacra-pagina-the-acts-of-the-apostles-volume-5) --- *Product available on Desertcart Japan* *Store origin: JP* *Last updated: 2026-11-02*
