I already had this cookbook. Bought three more for gifts. I actually got rid of most of my other cookbooks. Miss Mary was a genius in the kitchen!!!!! This is a true southern cookbook. I lived in the south for ten years, and have never eaten at a restaurant even close to as good as Miss Mary's Boarding House. When I am back on the east coast, if I am within 6 hours of Lynchburg I make the drive. That is how much I enjoy this place.

Miss Mary Bo Bo's Boarding House Cookbook is legendary. It is almost impossible to source a new, unused edition, and yet I found only (1) available on Amazon. Of course I ordered it immediately. It arrived the next day, as promised, and was NEW, with a plastic wrapping enclosing the book so the dust cover wouldn't sustain damage. This was the perfect transaction, also THANKS for using a small cardboard box, and not an oversized which offers too much wiggle room.

When my mom and I went to Lynchburg, TN for our Christmas Candy Run she kept looking at this cookbook. It is a really good cookbook. I went to order on Amazon which I was interested in this book. So heck I ordered 2 of them which I am glad. Simple but good recipes. A must have in every kitchen for southern cooking!

Like other reviewers, I've heard of this establishment for many years, but have never been there. I purchased this book based on the other reviews and ratings.This is a beautifully written book, profusely illustrated with photographs and personal accounts of locals and boarders. In addition, the recipes are written in a very clear and easy-to-follow style for the less experienced. Most of these recipes exist in one form or another in other books of mine, but some of the seasoning combinations are unique. I've always felt that good home cooking has that indefinable ingredient, some call it love, that raises ordinary ingredients to art.However, I must agree with a prior reviewer about putting Jack Daniels in so many of the recipes. From what I've read, Miss Mary didn't drink or use booze in her cooking. So why put it in here? I feel Jack Daniels hurt its credibility, and the credibility of the book, by doing this. They couldn't be selling many extra bottles of whiskey by pushing it in these recipes.I don't know whether this restaurant has made or lost money since its takeover by Jack Daniels. Certainly, the distillery has performed a public service by maintaining this traditional establishment. For that, I'm appreciative.This book will make a good gift for someone, particularly someone who's a whiskey fan. I have enjoyed it myself, with the above caveat.

I had the pleasure of dining at Miss Mary Bobo's in Lynchburg, Tennessee. The southern food and family style atmosphere are second to none. I purchased the cookbook hoping to be able to recreate some of the fine food at home. Yes, it is a cookbook with recipes in it - just like any other. However, this cookbook also includes stories and historical accounts of the history of Miss Mary and her boarding house. I recommend this book and have even given copies as gifts.

There are numerous recipes and many seem interchangeable with each other. I enjoyed the history of the residents and the hotel/boarding house. I found it puzzling that Miss Mary didn't allow alcohol in her hotel, and yet every other recipe had a 1/4 cup of Jack Daniels whiskey in it.

I have tried several recipes but the one so far a success was the banana pudding! It was DELICIOUS and was a big hit. The Thousand Island recipe was not a big hit in my house but I’m still excited to try other southern recipes.

I’ve been using this cookbook for 15 - 20 years. Lost my original book in moving so had to get a replacement.
