Hello! At Bartovation we pride ourselves in offering some of the most economical tests in the world. This test is our least expensive test for chlorine in restauraunts and food handling facilities!

is the whole strip supposed to change color or just a small line?

The entire portion of the strip that is dipped is supposed to change color. If you are only seeing a small line at the top of where you dipped the strip what that means is your chlorine level is substantially higher than the strip was designed to test. This strip is only designed to test diluted bleach in the range of 0-200 ppm and is not for testing undiluted bleach or chlorine (as high levels of chlorine actually bleach over the color changes, making them not appear on the strip). Once your solution is in the testing range all of the strip that you dip will change color. Can i use these strips to test free chlorine in my hot tub?

This strip is designed to test chlorine based sanitizers in restaurants and measures total chlorine (free/available and bound) chlorine, not just free chlorine. Also, the lowest measurement this strip gives is 10 PPM, so it will not produce an easy-to-see reading for the chlorine concentrations of most pools.
