Many people are often start in the hobby of model boat building by getting a large complex kit or getting one as a gift. This usually leads to disappointment as the large ships need a lot of skills the beginner does not have. This kit is the perfect introduction to the hobby. It has a great instruction manual that has a lot of tips and takes you through the process.This kit comes in two versions, one just the Dory and one with basic tools and paints you will need. If you have done basic modeling you probably have almost everything you need. If not here are tools you will use for all your future models.This is the first of three progressively more complex wooden ships that model expo makes to start people on this journey. I recommend all of them as a great start. In addition there are online sites such as Ships Of Scale that contain a treasure trove of advice and build logs of various ships!I hope you have as much fun and enjoyment as I have in getting into this hobby.

I started with this particular Dory kit as I had no previous experience with wooden model ship building but knew that I need to start somewhere. This was a great introduction to basic building techniques, came with very easy to follow instructions, and left me with a finished model that inspired confidence to continue learning with a slightly more complex kit, the Norwegian Sailing Pram. The Dory is a perfect entry point for beginners, providing just enough challenge and learning to keep you interested but not too much that you get frustrated. Highly recommend this kit for anyone looking to start into the wooden model ship building hobby!

My experience in model building has been almost exclusively to plastic. I decided to venture into wooden boats and ships. The Dory kit is a good entry level kit which introduces the modeler to wood plank on frame ship building and how to work with wood. The wood kits are not “speed build” projects, but an exercise in patience and craftsmanship. Thoroughly enjoyed this kit…more to come!
