The main compartment might be large enough to fit a 32 ounce Nalgene bottle on its side however you'd need to put something underneath it to take up space in the lower half and it would be filled up. There are trade-offs and the tapered shape keeps it from sticking out too far. The actual water bottle holder on the outside fits a small 500ml water bottle with a little room to spare, or a 20 oz Gatorade style bottle snugly. The waist strap feels like good nylon or polyester and can be adjusted very long.
